Got the UltraGauge a week or two ago and I'm averaging between 22.5 and 23 MPGs typically. About what i thought. I want to see how bad it gets in the winter. My MPGs nosedived this past winter.

A lot of my driving is city driving, stop and go.

35-55 is the sweet zone. Cruise between those speeds and UG will be at 40+ mpgs on the Instant MPGs.

Your breaking down the driving time compared to the fuel cost inspired me to come up with a little bit different break down of my own.

If you drive one hr at 27 mpg and you drive 60 miles in that one hour (60 mph) the cost per hour would be 60/27=2.22 gal. times the price per gal. of say $3.75 x 2.22 = $8.33 / hr

    at 22 mpg it would be 60/22=2.72 gal. times $3.75 x 2.72 = $10.23 / hr the savings per hour of 27 mpg compared to 22 mpg at 60 = $1.90 / hr

Kind of a different and interesting way of looking at it. Good for figuring freeway driving, except it's a little depressing to think at 26 mpg and $3.84 a gal. I'm being gouged about $8.86 and hour by the gas companies every time I get on the freeway and about 10 bucks an hour on the back roads. There are people in my area working their butts off for an hour for one hour of drive time before taxes. That really sucks.

Here is another way of looking at it. I am retired. Worked hard all my life and saved enough money to do what I want within reason.

My daily routine includes a trip to town, lunch, a walk, buy a 32 oz beer and come home. The round trip to town is 24 miles (call it $3.50 in gas). lunch at Taco Bell for a chicken soft taco and a free senior drink is $1.69. The walk is free. The 32 oz Budweiser is $1.99 plus the stupid bottle deposit of 5 cents. That adds up to $7.23 per day. $7.23 times 30 days is $216.90 per month. $216.90 per month is $2,602.80 per year.

Kinda expensive to go have lunch and a drink wouldn't you say?

Nice to see most of you are getting over 20. I just got my Tacoma so it'll be interesting to see what I end up getting. One of the guys that works with me at my dealership has an '09 reg cab 4x4 5 speed just like mine and he routinely gets 22mpg and he does all city driving. It gives me hope!

    Newbie question...sorry!

Does the dealership's recalibration of the speedometer for larger tires also correct the odometer?

I don't know what the dealer can do or what it would cost but since I have had my GPS I don't really use the pickup speedometer.

LOL...like I said, newbie question. After some more searching, the answer is no, they cannot.

I've never switched tire sizes before this truck and it confuses the hell out of me! I have a graduate degree and cannot get my bearings as far as figuring MPG...I KNOW the odometer is jacked up because of the bigger tires, just can't figure out how.

I am actually getting more miles out of a tank than my odometer reads, correct? I just need to know the difference in mileage...so, my MPG is better than what I calculate based solely on odometer/trip readings???

Drive past 4-5 mile markers on the frwy and see how much you get on the trip. It's most likely gonna be around a tenth off each mile or a half a mile off over 5 miles which would be 10%. Then just add whatever percentage off you come up with to your tank mileage and divide that total mileage by how many gallons it takes to fill up. Mine used to be off a tenth per mile on an older truck so I always added 10% to what the trip said for the tank and divide by gallons to refill to get closer to true mpg.

from the online tire size calculator

So ~4% for 265's, ~8% for 285's, depending what you bought, u can substitute your own numbers.

More simply put.....if after five one mile markers your odometer only reads 4.9 miles you would need to decrease you mpg computation by 2% (you would be claiming 5 miles in your computation and in fact you were only getting 4.9 miles). If after five one mile markers your odometer read 5.1 miles then you need to increase your computed mpg by 2% (you would be claiming 5 miles in your computation and in fact your were going 5.1 miles). I my case my odometer reads reads 2% more miles than I actually go so the 27mpg I claim is really only 26.46mpg.

    OK...maybe not so simply put.

Holy crap I'm an idiot. If my ODO says 400 (w/265), then I just add 4% making 440? This, of course, based on the ~4% increase in diameter.

AND I'm liking the fact that my ODO is slower than me. Resale bonus : )

Im 60-40 split favoring city driving and I routinely get 22-24 mpg in my 4cy 4x4 5spd reg cab. The worst I ever got was 21 mpg and the best was 24.8. I bought mine in Feb of 2011

    400 + 4% = 416 not 440.

    4% of 400 is 16. (.04 x 400 = 16) 10% would be 40. Not much of a difference but a little if your calculating MPH.
