I'm pretty sure that the scanguage II will display something like "xxx" when engine braking. I don't have one myself, but I've read a lot of reviews on them.

And I use the same methods as you as far as coasting in neutral and engine braking.

I have noticed that excessive idling (especially with the AC on) wrecks havoc on mpg on the 2.7L... more so than on other engines I've had in other vehicles.

I'm running 33x12.50x15's, and also have a really heavy speaker box with four 10 inch subs. I'm getting about 18mpg. I'm watching, or should I say listening, to my rpm's to see how good I can get it with th tank I have right now.

I got 26.2 Saturday!! So excited! I was on country back roads doing 55-60 for almost 4 hours with very few stops. It would've been better but I had to do 70-75 for a little while to avoid getting run over in Little Rock.

I just made the exodus from Oregon to Arizona for the winter. We went through Boise, Salt Lake, Las Vegas and across to Phoenix. There were two of us and the back end had about 500 lbs of stuff in it. Since I was pretty heavy I kept the speed at about 67mph. I was astounded when I did the math. I got 29mpg plus or minus 1/2 mpg. I am sure that getting away from the ethanol required by law in Oregon helped a bunch.

2011 Access Cab 4x4 Automatic, stock tires & wheels. I did the math at the last fill-up: 19.5 MPG combined, using 87 octane.

Mostly in-town driving at around 25-35 MPH, occasional short hops on the highway.

I've got less than 4k on the odometer, so maybe the numbers will improve some with time. I expect that first they'll get worse when the winter blend gas shows up.

Be careful about running out of fuel. It is not a good thing for the in tank fuel pump to cavitate or run dry. It will cost big bucks to fix.

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
So what do you save in gas vs. the cost of a new clutch ? Seems you'd be using the clutch alot more and causing excessive wear.

I notice that you getting extraordinary mpg on your 2005. Must be that mile high altitude.

Definitely helps, maybe 2 mpg, hard to say I haven't been at low altitude much to compare, and when I was it was pedal to the metal trying to make time.

It must be more than 2mpg. It has become almost an obsession with me to maximize my mpg and there is no way I can foresee getting to 32.5 mpg average. I would be interesting if you had a chance to get a good read on your mpg at a lower density altitude. Do you still have the stock tires on your rig or did you go to a taller tire to act as an overdrive.

My best was with the stock tires, I have stock size michelin hydroedge on now and they have much worse rolling resistance, I'm more than just disappointed with them. I've posted this before but since you bring it up..... I got the tires between aug-sept 2009 and it was all down from there. A road trip to Memphis can be seen May 2009 which is down from 33 to 27-29, but again I was doing 75-80+ then, not the 55-60 I do normally at altitude.

You must have low gears and a V6. Automatic? My 95 GMC, 4WD stock everything, automatic was getting 10 MPG around town 13 freeway. New transmission and it does a little better but not much. I couldn't live with that so I bought the Toyota for the gas mileage and kept the GMC for hauling stuff. I really like the Toyota and it is the same and sometimes easier to work on. The 2.7 runs so smooth and I get 22 to 23 MPG around the back roads. Toyota's are nice trucks.

So if your talking 16 mpg around town? Well, it could be worse.

I don't find that with the 5-speed, I love the open road, just keep it below 65.
