Ya just found a thread from earlier this year of a guy fixing his 2.7 timing chain cover leak and holy crap thats a lot of work. I guess he ended up selling his tacoma after the ordeal. He ran into multiple issues along the way. Damn I love Tacoma's and have had a few and every one had a jacked up issue. idk what to do about it anymore. Wish I could buy a new one with a power train warranty.

called toyota they quoted me 1500-1600 to fix it I don't think Im up to the task of doing it myself I usually fix things myself but thats a little out of my league and is my daily driver so it needs to be done in a timely manner.

It really isn't that big of a deal. Like I said, I've had mine forever and I've never once detected a change in my oil Level. I'm very strict about changing/checking my oil. You can try the liquid gasket and it may work. I might try it as well. Definitely not worth tearing your rig apart to fix. Be smart and listen to others. Who the hell knows what might happen if you let the dealer tear that thing down. It may never run again.

True the truck will be paid off soon and is older so I guess I can just run it until it blows up. Ill clean up that area and try the gasket sealer. I think it might be unethical to spend that much money on a 9 thousand dollar truck. Its just frustrating and I like things being perfect. She does purr like a kitten though so that makes me happy. Only 120k on her.

Just run it until trading it in for newer one certified with drivetrain warranty if used and clean the area right before going to trade it in.

Might have to do that. Will probably keep this one till the wheels fall off though.

Either. Made by Permatex. Used it quite a few times. Works well on external applications.

Spray ths shit out of the area with carb or brake cleaner, let dry..... it will give the gasket goo a good bond.

It's ALL about good prep work! Good luck

Thanks lets hope it fixes the issue. At this point I mise as well just run it into the ground. I won't get anything for trade in and used tacomas are still extremely expensive. Bought this truck to get 100% out of debt hence why I sold my 2013. Is there a torque spec for the alternator bolts?

Im guessing all I need to do is disconnect battery, loosen belt tensioner, take belt off alternator remove the bolts holding it on and then reverse the process.

32 ft-lbs on the alternator bolts. My belt is squeaking on every startup, wondering if I have a leak somewhere on it too, but mine only seems to do it on rainy days so might just be water.

Ive done the timing cover on a 3rz 2.7 and half way through the job I realized yanking the motor from the start might of been an easier route.

As has been mentioned, the engine wont "blow up" with a timing chain cover leak, just make sure to monitor oil level more closely and you should be good to go. My wife's Honda Fit has had a rear main seal leak for 4 years now, she loses about 0.25 qts of oil every 5000 miles. I dont see a point in tearing into it until leakage becomes much worse, or whenever the stock clutch needs replacing (115,000 miles and still good). I doubt that your timing cover gasket is leaking much oil at all.

Ok so I took out the alternator cleaned the spot real well and put more than enough of the gasket goo on there. Even ran a bead down the rest of that side just in case. I might of over done it but I figured better more than too little. Cleaned off the bottom skid so its spotless that way I can detect a leak again. I will report back soon and let you guys know the outcome. If all is well maybe we found a way to save us 1600 bucks and keep our engines dry.

I forgot to take photos while i was in there.

For a good read look at what this TW member had to do to fix his. His was a 2.7 and leaking in the exact same spot as mine.

Mine wasnt leaking, I went it to delete the balance shaft assembly. It might be more or less difficult on your motor as I have only done this on the 3rz 2.7 but there were a good amount to steps involved. Almost everything between the timing cover and the radiator support had to be removed. A/C, power steering, alternator, water pump, fan, radiator, valve cover, crank pulley etc. If you have a 4x4 like mine then its even more work because on the 3rz the oil pickup is bolted to the timing cover and to undo the oil pan you have to drop the front differential.

80 miles so far and no leaks. I hope it stays that way. Will keep monitoring it but thanks too all the input this way while not perfect saved me a ton of money and worry.
