Need a new valve cover due to a crack in the original on my '05 that is seeping. I've searched TW, found a bit about replacing the cover and gasket, but not much concerning whether to go OEM on replacement.

Discounted at some online dealer sites and Ebay, I see prices around $250, give or take, for the cover. I also see some offerings on Ebay from the Middle East of what appear to be OEM that come in around $180-$200 with shipping. Rock Auto has a couple of non OEM offerings in the $75-$90 range, the higher with the gaskets included.

Anyone have experience with non-OEM cover on the 2.7l? Sometimes the price between OEM and non-OEM is not significant, but valve cover seems to be a bit extreme.

It is a tough call.I would go with OEM just for hopefully better quality control.

Buy Aisin, avoid Aisin, find Aisin, OEM is Aisin?

OEM, the current pne lasted 15 years, hopefully the next one lasts just as long.

Yep. Leaning that way. FWIW, it appears that the cover bolts have rusted badly and it appears their expansion is what cracked the cover at several of the bolt openings in the cover. Haven't been retorqued or futzed with ever, so I'm assuming that's what's going on.

ROCKAUTO, its more than 1/2 the price of an OEM one, all it is is plastic and a new gasket

I wouldn't bet on it; if that was my truck I'd buy a new cover. When the cover comes off, the ear in the first picture will probably also fall off. Even if it doesn't, there is no material left for that screw to clamp on.

Go with Aisin. They are Toyota OEM. As for rock auto? Couldn’t tell you, they refuse to ship to where I live in Alaska.

No junk yards around? That's where I'd be looking first. Hopefully you could find a donor with the rear end destroyed...

For a valve cover I'd go OEM. Some aftermarket products may look the same, but have differences in materials and or thickness.

Or they may be the exact same. But l personally wouldn't take the chance myself.

    Just my opinion..

Looks like this ground has already been plowed, at least to some extent. Think I'll go with OEM...gonna need all new bolts, looks like a couple dozen and they ain't cheap either. Ah well...I've replaced lots of stuff on this truck due to road salt...e-brake cables, drums that wouldn't come off without damage, 3rd set of calipers (pins more than that), power steering lines, rack, intermediate shaft, so what's another $300-400 for a plastic valve cover? LOL!

Edit: Lower oil pan, front diff breather tube nipple on top of the case. I'll edit again if I remember anything else.

Thanks. I don't see any under $300. I've ordered parts from toyotapartsdeal.com in the past, and it seems like their price is close to the best around, even with a $15.xx shipping charge.

    Yeah.
Go with the right amount of ugga duggas, too -- looks like someone tried to fix your leak with some extra ones, no bueno on plastic.

The cover and bolts are untouched since the factory. My surmise is the bolt shafts rusted, expanded slightly and caused the cracks. If not, then it's just the time-aged disintegration of the plastic cover itself. But, ain't no ugga duggas on those bolts since the vehicle left the plant.

    Yeah.

Personally, I'd be OK going aftermarket on that part.

Very tempting to go aftermarket due to cost differential. My hope in creating the thread was to see if there were folks who had used aftermarket and not had problems like the one noted in the thread I linked this morning. Seems as though very few folks have encountered the kind of cracks I have in mine, and simply made do quite well with gasket replacement.
