I was getting a valve job because my gasket was leaking out the front a bit 205k miles. They said it's about a 15 hour job to replace the chain tensioner, guide and chain and they are quoting me 3k.. YMMV

i've seen a 2.4 with over 500k and ive had a 2.4 with over 300k and neither had any issues with the original chain as long as you do the oil changes on time. I've also seen folks go 200k per timing belt on the 3.4 with no issues. with it being non-interference the worst that would happen is being stranded until a new belt was installed. Gotta love Toyota for that design.

Would you replace the chain/chain guard if you saw wear?

It must have been slipping at least but I never heard the ticking or slapping. I've heard it on 22REs but not familiar with it on the 2.7.

I believe that the 2.7 timing chain guides stand a better chance against wear than the 22RE engine would. The Achilles heel of the 2.7 3RG FE is the valve train lash.

I don't have experience with this engine, but some one who knows what they're doing wouldn't quote more than 8 hours. I've done a chain and tensioner replacement on another 4cyl and a head gasket replacement on my Tacoma, so I have some indication on what it should take.

You’re gonna want to ask in the 2nd gen section, this is a different engine. Just start a new thread there.
