This is encouraging to see. If either one is capable enough to do what I want then it becomes a matter of where I can find a better deal.

And awesome pictures, I wanna do something similar eventually but with a custom tent covering the bed.

Another thing to consider is the elevation in CO. When I was there, I felt significantly less power. Especially up in the mountains. I'm used to being in low elevation, so that might sway my opinion a bit.

Yeah dude, I've got heavy armor and load that camper up. Just have to be smart with gear changes and inclines.

    Quoted for wrong.

Speaking as the owner of a 2.7l 5-speed 1st gen, hauling 500lb doesn't bog me down at all.

Is the OP going to be getting bigger tires? That would make a difference too.

Not initially. I would consider going for a slight lift with some larger tires down the road a few years. With that being said I would buy a truck that has already been lifted a bit with larger tires but it won't make or break the deal. A 2.5 inch lift would be my absolute maximum for a first gen and a 3 inch would be my max for a 2nd gen.

We're just arguing semantics at this point. With that said, if you truly think your motor isn't affected by the additional load you lack a fundamental understanding of basic physics. Whether it be felt in the seat of your pants, gas tank, or any other number of mechanical components of your drive system and engine, be assured that your truck does feel an 500 extra pounds of weight.

Hm, might need to get a first gen with different gears if you'll be hauling bikes around the mountains (with 33"s). I really don't know though, my 1st gen never leaves Texas/Arkansas

Don't try and wriggle out of this by turning around and telling me I don't understand physics. Sure, more weight takes more work to move, burns more gas, etc. You said the engine would bog. It doesn't. That is all.

You're spreading miss-information if you're going to claim your motor isn't bogging down with additional weight. That is simply a false statement. If I put 5.29 gears, 24" tires and run 4 low I could tow 20,000 lbs up a mountain side without a single hiccup. This statement is completely irrelevant and meaningless towards advising the OP in his current situation. You're bringing up a situation that pertains strictly to you. You're engaging in an pointless argument that pertains strictly to you. Take a hike, you're adding nothing to this discussion. That is all.

My 21 speed huffy doesn't bog at all when I'm towing 3 other people on it up a hill if I'm in first gear .

I now realize why you are so vehement in your claim. If you think bogging means moving more slowly due to hauling extra weight, then sure, adding 500lbs will make you "bog."

The rest of us use the term bogging to describe a sharp RPM dropoff due to insufficient power going to the drivetrain. The result is that your engine will shudder, and if you do not downshift or abort whatever maneuver is causing your engine to bog, you will stall.

Your 21 speed huffy doesn't have an engine, therefore it can not bog. Your legs might cramp up? I guess your legs are bogging. Next time, tell the 3 people riding on your shoulders to take the bus.

This is a good point. When I drive through the mountains passes in CO I'm in 3rd and 4th watching people fly by me. FWIW, this is the case whether I'm stock weight or loaded up with 500lb+!
