Found this on the other forum... OP lost his rear end. Post 11 has another claiming that had theirs replaced as well. Both under 1k miles.

Why would anyone let a mechanic that isn’t certified to perform warranty repairs touch his truck?

    Sounds fishy…

Same thing with the 5 lug 2WD trucks on the early 2nd Gens. 2005-2006 trucks.
The neighbor bought one new. Less than 2,000 miles and his was whining.
Toyota fixed it, and has been good ever since.
I think they even had a TBS on it.

The crazy part is, I was pretty sure I could hear it the first time I rode in it.
But thought there was no way on a NEW Toyota. Things happen, they get fixed, we move on.

Toyota would have picked it up. At last my dealer did for my car for a warranty repair.

    Unless I’m missing something yes.

But just thinking about it now forgot Toyota uses a carrier design and doesn’t have a pumpkin. So they would have to drop the driveshaft and pull it all apart.

Here’s a quote from the OP:

“Pulled into a service shop the guy threw it on the lift said the rear end was smoking hot like it lost the bearing or a shim who knows. There was grease in it. He opened it and some poured out.”

When Toyota goes to investigate, it sure as hell isn’t in the factory shipped condition. This was not smart.

we used to get cars towed in all the time where they had another shop looking at a problem because something similar arised. They’ll obviously see the guy is out of town and that the tow address was the shops address. Unless the mechanic fked up putting something back together if he really did pull the driveshaft and carrier apart, there shouldn’t be any problems

OP update for the doom and gloom squad here.

"Ok slight update. Was able to reproduce the sound with the dealer. It is possible it not related to the rear diff and that could be a red herring. Said it sounded like a heat shield is coming loose and rattling on some part that is rotating.

the sound gets way louder as you slow down but he hit the gas and it totally disappeared for the rest of the test drive."

All that quote indicates is the service station pulled the fill plug which is easily accessible & verified theres fluid in the rear diff....
    thats all!!!!
The guy you quoted isnt technical when it comes to vehicles & his wording is a bit off....
The service station didnt rip his rear diff apart, what would be the point, not like they have parts...
They were just verifying theres was infact fluid in it...
    get it???????????

sounds like you do from both of your responses....
Im just trying to give you a more realistic perspective of what really took place, instead of your end of the world scenario....
