I have replaced my alternator twice and still no luck. I've put a multimeter directly on the alternator while the truck is running and only getting battery voltage. I held the positive on the 10mm strap and the negative on the alternator case. What am I missing? Truck shuts off if I disconnect the battery while running.

Does the 2nd gen have an exciter wire to the alternator? That should be a single wire ignition switched 12v source that is used to generate the initial magnetic field the alternator requires to generate electricity. If it isn’t attached or wired properly the alternator will never work.

I'm not sure. I'm trying to find that out. I'm trying to decode the wiring diagram for the plug that goes to the fuse box.

It looks like the 10A ign no2 fuse might be the exciter. Mine was blown. replaced it and it immediately blew again.

UPDATE, I had some kind of short in a fuse tap I had on that fuse. Took out the fuse tap and it's fine now. Check that fuse before you replace your alternator! Hope this saves someone money someday.
