2 questions about Hayden 698 transcooler install.

Hi, I recently installed a koyorad radiator and needed a transcooler and went with the Hayden 698 after seeing it recommended in a few places and have 2 questions after I completed the install.

    1. The kit says not to cut the transmission hoses and found a post on I believe a Nissan forum that someone cut the lines and he ended up losing a hose on the highway. But the lines are way too long and I have them awkwardly coiled in the bumper. What is the reasoning behind not cutting the hoses? They are sold in bulk at parts stores so I imagine you can cut those.

    2. After about a week of mostly highway driving I noticed in 50F temperatures my scan gauge read between 115-130 and today in the low 30Fs the transmission temp read between 95-120, most of the time just above 100F. I got the recommended size and the option with the internal temp bypass, but these temps seem way lower than what others are seeing. (I wish I had tracked trans temps prior to installing the cooler, but I seem to remember mostly seeing 147-170 year round, but that could be way off.)

Fuel economy seems to be normal, slightly lower on colder days.

Yes you can cut the hose, just make sure you make a clean straight cut and secure the ends well. If using hose clamps re-check after it has warmed and cooled.

post some pictures of your install so we can look for potential issues.

Coil hose is the best way to create flow restrictions and starvation as fluids may not be sufficient.

cut it and make it as short as possible

Not the clearest photos, but I checked the filter is in the correct orientation and there are no kinks in the lines. The send line is going to the top and the return line is coming out the bottom.

I'll be trimming the lines and moving the filter inside the engine now that I know that is ok. You’ll have no issue cutting the hose to the correct length.

Those instructions are a bit confusing.
What they are saying is to leave the hose in a "loop" until you have the cooler attached where you want it.
Then cut the hose to the right length.
"QUICK-CONNECT COUPLER INSTALLATION FOR USE ON VEHICLES WITH 5/16” STEEL LINES:
    8. Install Quick-Connect coupler to radiator using appropriate male or female end.
    9. Position hose loop next to Quick-Connect fitting and cut hose to length. Slide hose clamps onto hose loosely. Push hose onto Quick-Connect fitting at least one inch.
10.Position remaining hose next to disconnected transmission line and cut hose to length. Hose should be cut to fit at least 1” past flared end. Allow a minimum 3” radius on all hose bends.
    11. Tighten hose clamps."

I installed a Hayden cooler on mine about a year ago.

Those temperatures sound about right for the conditions you’re driving in. I put a plate in front of the cooler during the winter to help get to a reasonable trans temp. I’d say mine gets up to around 150-160 degrees on a cooler day. (Southern AZ, so around 60-70 degrees)

In the summer, it doesn’t get much past about 185 degrees with the plate removed. (100+ degrees)

Without the cooler, I could get up to 220+ in the summer just driving around town.
