Not sure if any of you were aware or given the opportunity, at 20,000 miles your cabin filter is covered under Toyota Care, for free replacement, as per maintenance in the service manual.

Anyways, I asked that it be done at my 20,000 mile service, and it was “done”. Didn’t look to see but trusted and moved on.

Now fast track to now, last weekend my wife and I made the trip to Arizona from San Diego, turned on the AC, put it to the recirculate setting, and it was blowing significantly less by at least 50% from normal AC setting coming from outside air. Usually it’s the opposite, it blows stronger when you press the recirculating function.

Had the chance today to make it down to the parts store to pay on an overpriced air filter vs. online, but whatever, I just wanted to arouse my curiosity, and sure enough, it was the cabin filter, full of twigs, leafs, dirt etc.

Trust me, in the 33,000 miles my truck has, it has seen more dirt and off-road conditions in the first 20,000 miles than it has in the last 13,000 miles by a margin of 4-1.

I’d say roughly 75 miles of dirt at most, and rear city/highway. No way did they change the air filter at 20,000 miles is all that I’m saying.

    Anyone else have similar experience?

I change mine much more frequently. They get dirty quick if you go off-road

Indeed they do, highly doubt it was changed.

With all the other mishaps that have been happening to many others in the forum it wouldn’t surprise me...

I typically change mine every 6 months. I do spend a decent amount of time off road.

When I still had complimentary service, I followed up to see if they had changed my cabin filter about a month later.

My curiosity prooved correct in that they had not done so but logged in the paperwork that they did.

I told them to change mine at my 25K service (had 22K but at 2year) , they said it is not on the list to get done so they skipped it , i pulled mine and it looked like crap and showed them it and said no way was this done at 20K like they said it was done ....
they said oops the teck had marked it done last time , and like i told them just like all my grease fittings that they say they "do' but don't, and half the stuff they "do" but don't ,
they gave me a filter... but the factory one looked like it was a carbon filter and they gave me a $3 one..
as i showed my son ,you always need to check what they do.

Allright. I got curious after seeing your picture. I changed mine last summer which was less than 12K miles ago, and here it is.

Dude, look at mine above. I changed it myself 9 months and 12K miles ago and here's how much junk was in it just now. I think OPs looks good! Guess I'll be picking up an air filter and a new cabin air filter tomorrow.

I didn't see any rat signs, except for that acorn. I couldn't see that any of it was chewed on, but I'm not sure how it can make it's way down there without being carried. In 10 years in this house, I've had them fill up the airbox of my motorcycle with acorns once, and they put them in my shop vac once. That was sure loud when I fired it up. Hope they aren't finding their way into the truck.

Just noticed you ride a BMW too. Little bastards like to hop up on the left cylinder and into the snorkel. I guess they have little acorn parties inside of my air cleaner.
