Thanks for all the replies and helpful information. Lastly, how are the arkon phone holders versus the ram x-grip?

 

Take my opinion with a grain of salt because, duh... but I had an x-grip, I hated it.
1. I dont like the way it looks without a phone on it, its like a fat four legged spider, with a big logo in the center
2. I didn't think it was a very strong grip even though it never dropped my phone.
3. Once the phone is clamped, the legs still have some room to mov e freely so the device can spin a little bit with the movement of the car.
4. You have to use two hand to get your phone in/out of the holder, this is what pushed me over the edge, I like being able to slide my phone in or out with one hand.

The Arkons I have are not pretty but I like the slim square look better than the spider, even though its more obtrusive without a phone on it. The grip is strong and can be operated with one hand, it can also hold a smaller tablet without a problem, unlike the x-grip

If I missed something buried in the 47 previous pages, then my apologies, but I wonder - have you (or anyone) considered using the existing Go-Pro mount at the top of the windshield?
It would be upside down, but perfect for radar detectors.

 

I think my personal issue with that would be that it be too far across for a phone. Or to even have an extended arm just to bring it closer?
This setup allows to be positioned near the driver.

This is a super long thread so it may be answered but what kind of stuff do I need to mount a phone and an iPad mini? Main kit with two balls? Swivel mounts for the phone and iPad? Arms? Thanks
