I think your brother is trying to fit a rim before deciding on a tire or size to go for. for example ... stock tire size... dont go to a 20 and try and offroad. There are stock 20" limited 4runner wheels as follows (borrowed picture from borikariduro) tacoma 4runner wheel.jpg which honestly aren't bad depending on what you want to do or you could go bigger on the tire like 14tacosport or myself and do some offroading as well.. knowing that there isn't as much sidewall on the sick 33" tires we are running ... here is mineIMG_0313.jpg

I am not doing anything that requires that much flex but the absolute weight savings by running 275/60r20's allow me to run 33's with no major ill effects to my gas mileage.

IF he goes into 20" rims. 20x9 with +20 to +25 offset with 275/60r20's might get him away with very minor trim job and still have a good stance. If you go wider you risk contacting the upper control arm and sway bar and rubbing the body mount.

Ok I stand corrected. A couple of these trucks actually look pretty damn good with 20's. Thanks for all the tips. I'll pass along the info to my brother.

Just swapped for 4Runner wheels on my '05 access cab. Needed a 3" leveling kit to avoid rubbing, but I really like the way it turned out. Hope this helps.

just got a simple lift on her
the only way 20s look okay is if you have a lift so you can throw bigger tires on there. 20s with 33s look good like on many trucks above.... but 20s with stock size meats on them is.... no bueno.

So I have a question because I've been contemplating a setup like yours even down to the same tires. I do a decent amount of driving, about 20k miles per year...just how bad will my fuel consumption be compared to stock Prerunner setup?

I get it, we have to sacrifice something but even though I'm extremely tempted to do it I just don't want to be kicking myself in the ass a few days later. At the very least I guess I'd like to have an idea so I go in knowing since I'm pretty sure I'm going to pull the trigger when my tires are finally gone.

Thanks in advance for the info

Fuel mileage is dependent on a couple different factors. I think the question you have to ask is if the rims and tires you choose are going to be grossly heavier then stock. Heavier means more power to turn them which means more fuel to run them. This is the reason I went with the 275/60r20 tire in the 20 inch rim setup. It is only 6lbs more per wheel total increase for the bigger size. Even with stock gearing I dont see much of a change at all. RPM's have changed greatly so the transmission is searching at speed for the hills and shifts down sooner. I will be regearing once I do my motor swap later this summer so I am not going to worry about it right now. If i wasn't doing the swap I would be regearing to 3.902 as this is both simple and cheap to do.
Being a pre-runner you are a 2wd unit. I would consider new tires and rims along with a regear to reap the benefits of the new tires size. 3.902 gears are available from a 2006 tundra rear carrier and some FJ cruisers, 4.10 are available from the cruisers. I wouldn't drop below the 4.10 as you will gain "power" but loose economy as a result.

I have included a PDF calculator from http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html with my tire size included to show you how close the gear ratio's would be.

I have made 3 charts using presaved data. best mileage is at 1800 rpm on the highway from what i have found. Basically stock vs 33's w/3.73 ratio, stock vs 33 w/3.902 ratio, and stock vs 33 w/4.10 ratio. If you wanted to keep the mileage as close to stock as possible if not get a little better it would be between driving slower with 4.10 gears or lower rpm with 3.902 gears.
