If we are getting technical there are four styles of mirror available for the entire first generation.

    • Ball Joint Style Folding Mirror
    • Folding Power Style, 1995-2000
    • Folding Power Style, 2001-2004
    • Stationary Manual Joystick Style
Your mirrors are the larger style 2001-2004 type power mirrors. If you aren’t the original owner they very well have been added on after the fact. I have two 1998’s and they came with the standard folding style ball joint mirrors stock from the factory. I replaced it with the 2001-2004 style power mirrors because I
    prefer them over the stock.

Here’s a good picture showing what the difference between the 1995-2000 folding ball joint mirror, and the 2001-2004 folding power mirror.

So your saying all 2000 model years come with the smaller mirror on the bottom in either power option or ball joint folding option?

Yeah that's what I was saying. I know those aren't the stock ones. Because mine are the smaller ones and it's a 99

Never thought that the ones on the truck were from a 01-04. I figured they had made two different sizes for different trims. The truck was 99% stock when I bought it. Must be a lot of people who swap them out I’ve seen a bunch with the same mirrors I’ve got on mine just figured some had them some didn’t.

Yeah I’ve seen a bunch on here talk about this stuff. I personally like the smaller mirrors

It’s not a bad thing. The bigger mirrors are a lot better - you can see a lot more with them. Is your truck wired for a power mirror switch?

Exactly. 1995-2000 never had that choice of larger folding power mirror that you have.

It doesn’t have any buttons for the mirrors inside I’ve never pulled them off to check for any wiring. I like the big mirrors since I can see everything with them.

Yep those are power mirrors, they're just not wired into your truck. It's very simple to do if you wanted to wire them up. Just a matter of about six wires and a mirror switch.

Hey all, new to the forum. Picked up a 1998 TRD PreRunner auto and am enjoying it very much. Possibly the most convenient vehicle I’ve owned. Just hit 240k miles and it runs great, shifts smooth and gives no issues. Has an rpm related tick but I’ve read it’s fairly common and I’ve heard other Tacoma’s at the gas station with the same sound. Almost thought someone was driving away with my truck once. Anyway I’ll be lurking around the forum reading as much as I can about this vehicle!
