I have a 2001 Tacoma that I bought with about 195k on it. Since then I've run it up to about 245k with minimal issues. I've had to do some maintenance such as a suspension rebuild. My catalytic converters are fried and my abs has something wrong with it I have yet to diagnose. But other than that she runs like a champ. No overheating. No burning of oil. I fully trust it in the backcountry of Colorado!

stock as far as I know- 270,000 miles!
31F6B37C-E8A7-491F-BED0-C51BB548925A.jpg Over the summer I bought a 2002 extended cab 4x4, from the original owner, who I’ve known since long before the truck was new.
It has 240,000 on the 2.7 with an automatic trans. i had to immediately replace the front struts, and rear shocks. As far as problems:
    1) the trans has a whine whenever in gear-(don’t know how long ago it had a fluid and filter change)
    2) Under part throttle, it has a severe stumble. I plan to check the plugs, but I suspect it’s going to be fuel injectors.
    3) I did a search for fuel filter location: it should be next to the transfer case, under the driver’s seat, correct? Well, it’s not!
    4) check engine light- had the codes read and it shows P440,441,446.
Being an old school, small block Chevy guy, this is all new to me. I bought the truck to be an “occasionally driven parts hauler”, but I’m enjoying the heck out of my $500 investment, and it’s now my daily driver for my 10 mile round trip to work.
Here’s a pic I took on Sunday after installing the tonneau cover.
Sorry for the long post- feel free to comment on 1-4, PM if that’s a better route to follow

$500 is the deal of the century. Looks great, maybe Rattle can/update the rims or lots of inexpensive Aluminum wheels available at junkyard if you want to go that route also.

#1 Change the fluid and filter

#2 Start cheapest/ Clean mass airflow sensor first

#3 Fuel filter/ Google search says it's on drivers side of motor and access thru wheel well. Difficult to change from what I've read. Clogged filter could be big part of your stumbling problem.

#4 Lots of people on T/W have chaser these codes https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/p0440-p0441-p0446-trouble-codes.200359/ At $500 purchase price I'd start with a new gas cap. If that doesn't work just put a piece of black tape over it and drive it.

Good luck with your $500 Queen

1998 4Runner (same chassis as a First Gen Tacoma) here with 228,000 miles. It was my daily driver for 5 years, now I use it for fishing trips, Thrift Store runs, etc. If you keep up the maintenance it will last practically forever. It's that Hilux DNA. Change the Front and Rear Diff Oil and xfer case oil every 5 years or so, lube the chassis each year and replace the front end components as they wear (they are relatively cheap and easy to find in stores or online). I never get work done at Toyota with 3 exceptions:

    1. Transmission Fluid Flush or Drain/Fill
    2. Coolant Flush when Toyota has the promotional coupon advertised
    3. Replacing your axle bearing seals if they blow.

Everything else do yourself or at your local mechanic or auto service chain store. Toyota will gouge you. For example, they quoted me $155 and 1.5 hours to lube the chassis and steering knuckle contact points. I took it to Firestone and they did the same thing in 15 minutes as I watched and charged me $12.00 They also put grease in my Moog front end components. If you get after-market tie rod ends, sway bar end links, etc. get the ones with grease fittings. They will last longer than the sealed ones IF you service them with grease once a year along with greasing your driveshaft. Only use the Toyota OEM or ZEREX Asian Vehicle antifreeze, stick with 87 Octane rated gas from a known supplier, and never let your gas run out while driving. Oil Change every 6 months or 5,000 miles, 5W-30 Oil only. Do these things and your high mileage Tacoma will be fine. Also, if your brake booster ever fails, get one from a salvage yard. They are expensive ($600-$900) just for the unit itself. I got one from a junk yard for $50 from a wrecked Tacoma with 34,000 miles on it. I had my mechanic put it on my '98 4Runner and it's still working fine after 3 years of driving. Labor was $175. Again, Toyota quoted me $1,800 for parts+labor. Avoid the Stealership!

I just did mine a while back and in my opinion, it wasn’t as hard as many people say. I saw a guy on youtube do this: started by taking the line that goes from the filter to the fuel rail off at the rail. Then i snaked it out through the plenum still attached to the filter. After releasing the filter from the engine block, you can just pull the whole assembly up to where you can work on it. Dont get me wrong, it isnt like changing an air filter but it’s not crazy hard. For what its worth the fuel in my 196000 mile old filter was pristine, and it was driven 12 miles a day on a dusty dirt road for most of those miles.
