Yeah, I read on here somewhere about that method. I am going to try that next time. Sounds like it might be easier, and smarter...:anonymous:

Gonna take me a bit longer.
I usually drive the jeep when it gets colder because the Tacoma gets quirky this time of year and i ran out of vacay days at work. Lol.

Picked up this gem with 234,046 miles from a friend of mine that has owned it since it had about 125,000 miles.

I swiped some 235/85R16 Grabbers and the steel wheels from another project of mine and bolted them on.

It has some frame issues under the bed and some rotted out bedsides but I have patched the frame up temporarily and have just been rolling with it.

EDIT: For the Record its a 99, 2.7 liter with a five speed

Everything I read on the nets tells me that the 15 year recall deadline has passed.
The previous owner had Toyota inspect the truck during his ownership and it was fine then so I think that ship has sailed.

Also the word on the street is that there was no frame replacement option for the pre 2000 models.
Taking a buyback was the only choice.

95.5-00 was buyback only. 01-04 owners were lucky enough to get a new frame from Toyota. That's probably why I see a lot more 01-04 Tacomas around me than pre-01 (NY).

    Flipped 204000 today.
2002 prerunner single cab. 2.7 with auto transmission.
Bought it for $600 from a friend through work, back in August. It had 202500 when I bought it. Put grabber all terrains on first thing and spent more on the tires than the truck
($640). Truck cranked right up and ran but was in need of some love.

I have since done the following maintenance:
-new emission components so it will pass NC emissions.
-new valve cover gasket. wasn't leaking enough to really matter but I like an engine not covered in oil.
-new ac compressor with new belts and pulleys.
    -new rotors and pads.
    -air filter(k&N) why not
    -winshield wipers
    -battery
-I also sanded it down and primed it and painted it with a fresh coat of eurethane. It was a painters truck and the paint job was toast.

So I’ve had my 04 for about a year and a half, bought it with 190k and now I’m sitting at 205k. The engine and transmission are rockstar. I’ve replaced/repaired quite a bit of suspension because they were worn out, but for the original 3k I paid for the truck its the best investment ever.

love hearing that...my late 2000 at 278k 2.7l 4x1, still strong as hell (22r engine or something ? it's got the 4 FI and 2 c/p's) v/c leaking worse...thinking i would be an idiot to get rid of her, since i bought a 2021 3.5 4x4 after i put her in the shop for a misfire i did not have time to figure out. keep for my 14 yr old when he gets older or for lake/kayak ventures. only one speck of rust where a rock hit the hood (original owner) the rest of the body/frame is perfect, just no more c/c left... it's a loving off-white with my satin black PD bumpers/grille and wheels

My 04 4x4 has 262k on it. I bought it new while I was living in San Francisco. I wanted the commercial plates for work in the City, hauling motorcycles and 4wd for Tahoe & Baja. I put the Tundra WE (Smaller) calilper and rotors on. Steel braided lines from wheelers, OME 881 springs and wheelers 3 leaf add on the rear. Bilstein 5100's all around. Springs are set on the loweset clip up front. I didn't measure the lift, but it's between 1-2". No problems with my CV's. The truck has 235/85-16 BFG KO2's on it now. I really like the added traction in the snow and the slightly better gas mileage than the wider 265/75 combo I had before. The skinner tire also doesn't rub the frame at full lock. They are definetly more squishy going around freeway on ramps though. Aired down they do fine out in the desert washes and on beaches.

After hooking up a Scangauge, I noticed that the truck is running at 204*, so even though the timing belt isn't due for another oil change or so, I'm replacing the thermostat to be sure the jiggle valve is at 6 o'clock. I'm also installing a green fan clutch while I'm in there. This weekend's mission also includes new rotors, flush the brake lines, install a trans cooler, polish the headlights and install a new grill. I bought a large supply of grill clips!

Last thing to get out of the garage will be a front mount hitch. For those of you who also have the destroyed driver's side plastic seat cover, the $30 ebay piece matches up nicely.

The only problems I had were pretty basic; axle wrap early on solved with the wheelers springs and regular drive shaft lube. The valve cover gaskets needed replacing, one alternator, couple/three batteries and I changed out the radiator when I noticed it starting to leak. Standard maintence otherwise.

I'll keep the truck for another few years. My son is 10 now so I figure when he's no longer able to fit in the back seat, I'll get something new. Maybe Toyota will have remodled the Tacoma line by then!

3.17.21 edit; jiggle valve was installed at 12 o'clock. I installed a new thermostat with the valve down this time. I'll be switching mechanics for the next timing belt install. Now the runs at 185-188. On a trip from San Diego to Mammoth/June Mtn, loaded down, I drove it to keep the trans under 200. The overdrive really heats up the trans on any kind of hill.

Ignore the check engine light, it's been on for the past 150k+ miles.
