Took over my wife's 2004 Taco with 196,000 miles on it. Runs great, normal things, had to replace AC components and heater core. Steering linkage. Now looking at timing belt, have been advised to replace water pump at the same time. Also, looking at replacing shocks and struts since they have never been replaced. Someone suggested using Pre Runner struts because I have a four door and they are heavier than a regular cab?

My baby Fishstick runs great after 203k ish miles. Shifts are smooth, and the only problems I've had were dealing with the suspension (last owner REALLY took bad care of it.), and even then it was relatively easy to replace. I even ended up accidentally dropping the thing off the jack while working on the suspension, and it slid about 6 to 8 feet on the rear brakes - 0 issue. We replaced the clutch too, just because we didn't want to have to do it down the line, and honestly we didn't probably need to. Overall the old tacos still run well after 200k. I would go for it! Some of them need love, but it'll only connect you more with the truck.
