200 amp alternator, replace stock fuse box wires?

    1. Ok.... So I might have possibly forgotten where one cable goes.....
    I think it goes on the alternator output. Black with a blue strip coming out from bottom of stock fuse box.
    2. I might have possibly touch said wire to engine and shorted it out.... Ok..... Definitely touched wire to engine and sparks flew.
    Now... I looked at the fuse box and saw the 140 amp alternator fuse is blown. Question is
    1. Was it because of contact with the engine or alternator giving too much juice?
    2. Will I need to make a new wire to replace the stock to handle amperage?
    3. Will I need to replace/bypass the original fuse and install a 200 amp?
    Any help/info/links would be greatly appreciated.

    You are correct that it blew because you shorted the battery to the engine block through the fuse. Just replace the fuse and don't worry about it. Hopefully that is all the damage.

    I think it's assinine that Toyota uses black cables for power cables - power cables should not have any black on them. In our Tacos, the battery to starter cable is black with red line and the alternator to fuse box cable is black with a blue line. I don't recall the color of the alternator to fuse box cable - I'll guess it's also black with a blue line. I, too, have installed a 200 amp alternator. I beefed up both cables - the alt to fuse box and the fuse box to battery, but I have a 2nd battery.

    I don't think you can find an OEM fuse greater than 140 amp. I have a thread that may be helpful to replace the fuse. Check out CODUTUS' entries; he didn't have to disassemble as much as much as I did.

    I read an article some time ago when I was researching high output alternators - if you increase your alt output significantly and you don't increase the wiring gauge, you can damage your alternator as it struggles to push more amps through OEM size wiring. I don't think the 200 amp alt is too much unless you install a high amperage device such as a winch. To play it safe, you'd run a beefier wire from alternator to a power block. From there attach the alt to fuse box cable; then add a cable from the power block directly to the battery.

    Thanks for the input. @Chuy I actually used your write up to remove the old fuse and repair it. (talked to a Toyota tech and he said it's fine as long as I replace it soon) While I was at it I replaced that black and blue with a red 1/0 awg. Also used the old black and red stripped wire as the battery to fuse box (2 awg I think). Turns out my brand new alternator was putting out 17 volts. Have to send it back for repair.... My fuckin luck.

    @Thyces Where did you get your alternator from? I got mine from eBay vendor bnrparts. Got one for daughter's Corolla also. Voltage is on the low side, 13.5 to 14 volts, for both but after a year, both are working well. I wish voltage was 14 to 14.5 volts.

    Forgot to add, I added a 150-amp aftermarket fuse from power block to battery connection - on both the Taco and Corolla.

    Hope you get your alt fixed and hope it didn't do any damage to your electronics.

    Mechman. Very good customer service. I reinstalled my old one and everything seems fine. Only time and a multimeter will tell.
