$2000+ cost to replace "Forward Recognition Camera"

I was shocked to know that my 2018 Tacoma need to replace this "invisible camera". It all happened last week. A whole bunch of warning signs were lit at the same time - Brake Override Malfunction, Drive-Start Control Malfunction, Pre-Collision System Malfunction, Lane Departure Alert Malfunction.

Local dealer did diagnose, found out the the forward recognition camera is bad and need to be replaced. Estimated cost is $2000+. Toyota warranty is 3 year/36000 miles. The truck mileage is only 27,000 miles.

I am the original/only owner. I bought it new in 2018, the truck has been given service in the same dealer I bought it from.

I remember there was recall regarding this pre-Collison system. I don't know what the dealer did, but there is a stick under hood, stating "Authorized modifications - Pre-collision". which makes me think that Toyota may have known issues the camera related thing.

Does anyone have similar problems?

 

make a plea to Toyota corporate for financial assistance with the repairs given the low mileage and service history. Worst they can say is no. Otherwise, bend over and cough or trade in for a new truck? You'll likely bend over and cough on the trade in deal too though.

I asked the service manager to request Toyota goodwill program. He said he would try. I call in dealer asked the status today, was told the request was denied...

I will try to contact Toyota directly. Will report here.

 

And this is why the smallest of fender benders can cost thousands to repair now… overpriced, unnecessary technological junk. Or as in your case, the junk just fails and your stuck with the bill. Sorry to hear it man.

The recall was the milliwave sensor, not the camera.

 

Try to find a 2015 to trade it for . I know, that sounds terrible, but then you’d have a better truck!!

can you just disable the system and somehow cut the lights from the dash? i don't even use cruise control let alone adaptive cruise control and lane assist whatever i'd hate to have to fork out 2k if my system shits the bed.

 

Why not just buy a camera and install it yourself if you can, or have an indy shop do it for much less?

 

If you read the owner's manual it states how to turn off Toyota Safety Sense. Maybe the dealer could turn them off permanently via TechStream.

Yikes 2k+!!! Toyota is a little proud of their camera at that price point. As mentioned above, disable if possible.

 

i try to dump as much tech as possible. When it goes, it GOES!

that vehicle could be fixed from to back with a basic took kit, rubber fuel hose and duct tape…….I’m not wrong

 

Where is the forward recognition camera located?....only camera I thought a 2018 had was on the tailgate.

 

As a tech working on this stuff, I can only imagine what will happen in 10 to 20 years when people bring their car in for service and they need to replace some expensive part like that.
Do we not fix it, fix it (costing the owners a lot of $$$), disable/remove the failed part, or junk the car (disposable cars?, don't let the environmentalists hear you say that).

 

They wont do that. OP might be able to tho.

 

I mean I dont need my flat screen tv to work.
