hello, i own a 2000 tacoma extend cab 4x4. i got the letter to bring it in to check to see how bad the rust was on the frame about 3 years ago. at that time it wasn't bad enough to do anything. i got another letter about 6-8 months ago saying they could fix the rust if i brought it in. my question is, are they not buying the trucks anymore from the owners if the frame is rusted out? how bad does it have to be before they will buy it? thanks.

Lots of info on here on frame rust and the buyback program. Search under the 1st gen forum.

If you have a 2000, from my experience (my 2000 was bought back a year ago), they only will do the buyback. There is no repair. They only replace the frame on the 2001-2004 model years and buy back on 1995-2000 (if you are within 15 year warranty as the early years are obviously no longer under warranty).

Has to have a hole in the frame to do the buyback. Can be a pinhole though. They will do a hammer test (literally hit the frame all over with a ball pin hammer to test it).

My advice, just bring it in to get it checked. If it fails, you got a ton of money and if it passes, then you are good to go.
