2000 Ignition Lock Repalaced

After years of telling my daughter to take all the crap off of her key chain the ignition lock finally gave out. Thanks to youtube figured this repair was easy. Ordered the new cylinder on line from Advanced Auto, 20% off, picked it up locally. The whole repair was less than 30 minutes. Yes it now has 2 Keys. My local locksmith said rekeys usually fail after a couple months.

 

How exactly does this repair work?
My ignition cylinder at times does not even register that I’m turning the key to on, no click or crank

 

In my case the key would not turn to ACC or start. The lock cylinder was worn out. If your key turns then nothing happens, I think that’s a different issue maybe the ignition switch that is after the lock cylinder?
