Is it normal for the shift lever (auto trans) to move fore and aft during auto shifts and load?

During normal driving, the lever moves along with the load on the transmission - maybe 6mm in each direction (fore and aft). Its tends to move when accelerating / de-accel / shift points. No other symptoms - just a lot of lever movement...

Mine moves way farther than 6mm! Mine (2000 PreRunner) moves what looks like 2 inches, which is why I have this horrendous driveline torque/axle wrap that I need to fix. I've replaced the rear leaf springs, I've rebuilt the driveshaft and lubed the slip yoke, and I'm about to replace the engine and trans mounts. I know that some clunk is designed into these trucks, but man o man mine is baaaaad! I really don't think slapping a u-bolt on the springs is a very viable solution, either, so I'm looking to minimize it to the normal range before I tackle the last little bits.

yep, I've noticed the movement since day one and always thought, hmm this moves a lot!

never an issue though. most likely due to the t-case hanging off the back of the trans and the support is forward of the t-case causing an almost "cantilever" effect

Really, that shouldn't be considered normal for any car. Mine wiggles a little, but no as much as 6mm. I would look to replacing engine and transmission mounts if youre doing all that work.
