Hi, the check engine light on my 2000 Prerunner just came on. Engine is running just fine, the same as before check engine light came on. Can anyone advise on where to start looking for the cause of light to come on ? I am at 250k miles and this is first issue I have had with my truck. Thanks in advance for any help. I really don’t want to take to dealer for diagnostic unless I have to.

It depends if your getting into working on your truck it might be time to buy your own code reader to allow you to pull your own codes.

That said any of the Chain Auto parts stores should pull your codes for free .

Once you have the code it points you in the correct direction.

Then if you have a trusted shop I would hope they can pull the codes.

Remember it is always the complete circuit not the sensor or part in question.

I just took to Auto Zone for scan and code is P0402 ( excessive EGR flow detected ) and to replace EGR valve and clean EGR ports. Is this a serious condition and costly to repair . The guy at auto zone said it won’t pass emissions now.

It depends if your fixing it yourself or having a shop doing the work.

It could be as simple as a dirty EGR valve stuck open you can only pull it off and check things out .

always good to know what engine and mileage and your location

If your state has emission inspections as long as the Check Engine Light is on the vehicle will not pass.
