Alright yall. My 2000 Tacoma won't start. When I turn the key I hear the fuel pump come on by nothing else happens. I've changed the starter, ignition switch and starter relay. The only seeming progress I've had was when I switched the starter and it kicked on once.

When the problem started the truck took three turns of the key to turn over. Next time 7 and next time 25. Lucky I got it home on that last one.

    Suggestions?

Grounds are good. Mechanic friend who came by said the reconditioned starter I got may be bad even though the bench test said it was good due to the starter having load on it in the truck. He tried to Jump the starter but it wont turn over now

Is everything plugged into the starter ? Had that happen once when I replaced mine, looses connector. But grounds are usually the problem here especially if you're not getting a code

Okay so switched it out for another starter and she started once. Tried to turn her over again but she just loses all her power. Now I definitely think its a ground issue as I used a car to jump my battery and the starter just rapidly clicked like a machine gun out of ammo. Tired to start it when it wasn't plugged into the other car and the starter clicked once. Took the jumper cables and attached them to the frame and had a little bit more success as she was getting a small amount of power.

Basically I dont know where to start with checking my grounds.

Found the big ground that comes out the battery and connects to the engine, that one looks fine but I dont know where else the grounds go. Yes I plugged everything back into the starter :p

Should be a chassis ground somewhere close, I know ones right under the oil filter but that might be the engine one you're talking about lol you should also have one going from the battery negative to your firewall right by the battery. That's where my issue was

The one next to the battery I thought as I stripped the ends of a 5" piece of 12g electrical wire. Attached it where the old shit ground was there and got her to come on 10 times... looks like I got it. Thanks!

Should I change this out for a 10g wire or something even bigger?

I guess its really 3 things all electrical related. Listed in order of importance:

One - When I bought the truck the clock wouldn't work, thought it was a defective part but I replaced the fuse that is also on the cigarette light and aux power outlet circuits. Tried to use the lighter and it blows the fuse but as long as I dont use the 12v outlets the clock works fine. Think its a short but I need to figure out how to fix it.

Two - The cruse control functions intermittently, less often than more often. Could the ground issue fixed this problem?

Three - Radio stopped working one day. Just stopped no reason.

In all cases the fuses are good. I came into this truck knowing at least this about vehicles.

Try cleaning the connections on the back of the cigarette plugs, I remember reading about other members having a problem similar to that related to the plugs. Could fix your radio issue also haha but does your cruise control get effected by turn signals by chance?
