Hey guys looking for some help on a problem I'm having, quick background I have a 2000 Tacoma trd 4x4 with cel on, got what I thought to be a good deal on this truck and I have fixed numerous issues ( TG motor mounts, trans mount, cat, exhaust, 4x4 vacuum lines, timing belt pulleys water pump) one problem remains I'm getting codes p0330 and p0325, which are knock sensors bank 1&2. Now while I was into motor doing other maintainence I went ahead and changed my knock sensor harness ( the wiring was brittle and degraded) I did not change the sensors themselves based on research and people saying they rarely go bad. My question is what should I try next ? Check continuity from harness towards ECM? Has anyone had the same issue? What was your fix? This is frustrating as I really don't want to take intake manifold off again. Hope somebody can help thanks in advance!

Oh and I forgot to add that trucks performance does not seem to be affected.

Did you reset the code after changing the wire harness?

Dont have a code reader but I Disconnected battery and after initial startup code was gone. Took it for a drive around the block and it came back. Since both banks are showing maybe its a open circuit? Not sure where to go next.....

if the harness is new and plugged in properly, you can use a multimeter to see if the knock sensors are working.. you will have to do some research i cant remember the procedure..

it is odd that both sensors would go out, those things usually last forever and if one does go you can usually run both ecu inputs off of one sensor..

I hate problems that dont make any sense, GL with the fix

Ok so I've checked continuity from ks connector on engine harness side to ECM connection e7 pins14&15, it's a closed circuit on both which I believe tells me that I don't have a short in my harness itself. So maybe i need to dig back into motor and test the sensors? (wish I would have done that the first time!) has any one had both sensors go bad? Seems odd to me, thanks for the replies, any other suggestions?

Not familiar with the knock sensor, sorry, but I have read where ppl mounted a GM knock sensor on the outside of the motor. Supposed to be better than the Toyota sensor (which doesn't prevent knock below 2k RPMs IIRC).

Yeah I heard of the external mounted option. I'd like to keep it factory if possible, has anyone used non oem knock sensors? Oem is what I prefer but do aftermarket work just as well?

External means you dont have to tear apart your engine everytime your sensor goes bad :notsure:

Hey guys just wanted to update the thread, I hate researching and not seeing a problem resolved! So with that being said, I fixed my knock sensor issue! I ended up having to go back into the motor(I had already replaced the ks harness) I went ahead and replaced both knock sensors. Put it all back together and check engine light is gone! Passed emissions with flying colors. So even though most of the time it is just your harness, while your in there just replace the sensors, because they can go out. Thanks for the replies,

Thanks for posting a follow up. So many people have written about this problem and nobody ever says they got the CEL to turn off! So I'm dealing with the problem and Toyota wants $201 for each sensor! On ebay I can pick them up for $20. Did you go generic or OEM? Also did your part # correspond with One being 89615-12040 and other 89615-12090? Finally where did you buy them? Thanks Alot. I'd hate to try and go cheap to find out I should've gone OEM since it's such a labor intensive project.

Ok so here's what I did, I too had a concern about oem vs generic, I always use oem but did not want to pay 200$ per sensor. I bought the sensors off of ebay and they were listed as oem but I payed 64$ per sensor. There's two different sensors made for toyota, denso and the other is mitsyo or something like that. I believe the part number I ordered was the one ending in 90, so long story short after receiving the sensors I went to the dealer and compared their 200$ to mine, they had denso clearly written on theirs, I had a small "m" on mine... I'm assuming mine was the mitsyo. Either way they couldn't clear even with my vin which part number I should use and the guy there said if he were me just try it with the ones I bought and see what happens. Well that's what I did and it worked out perfect. Word of advice replace both and the harness at the same time, so you don't have to tear it down twice like I had to. And to be honest I'm not sure the ones I bought are oem or knockoffs but it works. None of the sensors at dealer or otherwise have engraved part #s. So good luck let me know if you have any other questions, I might be able to help.

Are both knock sensors identical? Could I order 2 of the exact same sensors and replace them both?

In 2016 I had both knock sensors and the harness replaced. The guy who replaced them tried to save me some money by using aftermarket KS's.
One or both went out on me today. I remember coming to Tacoma World Forum shortly after having the work done in 2016 and reading "don't use anything other than OEM and use the same type KS that came out of your rig". Everyone was saying to be sure and replace Denso with Denso, and Matsushita with Matsushita. Those were wise and sage TW members for sure.
I don't know about you but I think I should have gotten more life than just 5 years out of the one's I had installed.... aftermarket or not.
I will never use aftermarket electrical components on my Toy ever again. Can't afford 2k every 5 years to replace some stupid part.
