I was recently under my Tacoma putting in New shocks when I noticed some rust. So I took the truck to the local dealership and they inspected it and it qualified for the buy back program. They said the truck would be bought back from me and sent to the crusher. The rust is only on one side of the frame and looks that it could be patched fairly easily. It's a 2.4L 4x4 5 speed with only 150000 miles on it and everything is in great Condition. I hate to see this truck crushed, but I am looking at getting a 2nd gen Tacoma for more room. Has anyone gone through this program and any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

it rusts from the inside out so how it looks everywhere else doesn't matter, if it rusted through in one spot then chances are it is about to break through in many other places as well. they don't buy them back lightly and wouldn't be doing it if it was safe to "patch" them so the truck is a loss unless you can get them to replace the frame.

if not, see if you can get them to buy it back and sell it to you for scrap value so you can keep the parts

They told me I could negotiate the price with them to some extent. What would the truck go far if the frame was in good condition?

It came up as $5500. Do you think that's accurate? I can't find one similar to this one for less than 9500.

I have read several posts regarding the buyback that mention the payout is 150% of blue book for excellent condition for the year/model etc... regardless of actual condition.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
You must have a 2.7 because the 2.4 is 5 lug 2WD only. Hate to break it to ya, but that's about the right price for it I believe. 4 cylinders don't hold their value like the V6 trucks do. Your only other option would be if you want to keep the truck is find a reputable fabrication ship that may be able to patch up the frame so it can hold up for another 10 years if you're lucky. That or go all out and pay them to build you a new frame from scratch.

On a side note, if you do in fact let them buy it back, you should look for a 2001-2004 double cab if you're looking for room. Not quite as much room as a 2nd gen DC, but still a lot more than any extended cab. I have no space issues with mine compared to the old 2011 access cab I had before. Besides, you should really stay with a 1st gen, we all know the 1st gens are better! :D

I have never heard of being able to buy back a Truck once it has been delivered to Toyota.

Because of Liability issues if some clueless person unaware of the frame issues got a reconstructed title put it back on the road had a major failure killing someone else.

I am surprised they left you leave with the truck.

I decided to keep my 2000 and build a new frame.

I had to sign some papers saying they weren't liable. How much did you spend on a frame?

It is not yet to the point it needs to be replaced .

I have been slowly buying all the weld on new parts from Toyota .

Perhaps this Winter when I have another truck ready to go I will just renew it from the ground up .

It would not be worth it if I needed tp pay someone else to do the work.

    Naw,
Evidently there are standards if the person is the original owner, versus 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc...

From what I was told by my project manager, it's 15 years from the date the vehicle was purchased of the lot by the original owner. Then it is transferred to whoever buys it.

Can someone provide links to documents for this recall? I have been searching for this on the NHTSA and Toyota recall site and am finding nothing for these cars relating to the frame.

Also, are there any rcealls for the leaf springs on 1st gens, or is it just on 2nd gens?

For anyone wondering, Toyota sent me their offer in the mail. They are buying it back for $10,699.50. Because of this, I'll never own anything that is not a Toyota.
