I am currently in this awkward state where my truck of 3 years that I bought at 250k miles has reached now 296k. For the past year and a half I have seen significant change in how often I am now doing my spark plugs to keep my truck from misfiring. My truck is now to the point where I know the engine is on it's last legs and I am very much wanting to sell it privately more than using it towards a trade-in offer at a dealer (since they always low ball our trucks for the years and mileage). The head gasket is very much gone and has smoked since I bought it but it wasn't bad until recently where it smokes everyday I get into it, and smells very sweet of coolant burning in the cylinders. As well as when I changed my spark plugs 3 times in the last 1 1/2 years, they have smelt of coolant in the cylinder that always misfires which has been cylinder 1. I have had it verified when I worked as a tech at Toyota and recently again when I had a old Toyota master tech verify it again just so I knew I wasn't crazy.

Now, the real question is, how much is my truck worth for posting as is? I can't keep afford digging into my pocket right now trying to save up for a new vehicle and I do live in Willamete Valley of Oregon. I have done research to see what others have theirs posted for and I bought my truck for a decent price. Trucks like mine are currently between $7,800-$12,000. Similar miles, less mods on it, also having 4 cylinders in them being same value as a V6 of my model.

This truck has been through a lot and I have always tried to take care of it the best that I can, but financially its taking a toll. Its been in the snow, mud, sand, rain & has never failed me. It's also in really good shape for its age body wise too, I re-painted it with Raptor Liner with Red tint and Black Raptor Liner Accents including the bed. No frame rust either. It looked worse when I bought it and did everything I could to make this truck survive as long as it could, but the owners before did not seem to take care of it as well as I thought the longer I worked on it. I obviously have used my truck, but I made sure not to abuse it at any point that I have had it.

I will list what is wrong with my truck and most of it outside the engine I replace with Aisin parts which if anyone knows that's the parts brand that makes stuff for Toyota factory parts, I just went around buying directly from Toyota because of markup.

Any help on what you guys think I could get out of my truck would be great! I would put an engine in myself, but I do not have anywhere to put my truck when I am not working on it.

    Things needing fixed:

    - Engine Replacement (I don't know how bad the heads will be)
    - Water Pump Seeping slightly from driver side (I replaced it 3 years ago when I bought the truck)
    - Passenger CV Axle boot torn (Can replace with warranty through O'rielly's)
    - Transfer Case Housing Reseal
    - Leaf Springs are bowing (bending down slightly now) due to age and wear
    - Air box hose to Throttle Body is cracked at throttle body (currently wrapped in gorilla tape)
    - Will need new U-Bolts (Sheered off one thread to the nut when I went wheeling last year rock crawling, and bent 2 other threads, I didn't know my 4WD wasn't engaging at the time)

Things I have replaced that haven't had any issues with:
    - Sway Bar end links
    - Timing Belt Replacement
    - Thermostat & Gasket replacement
    - Front Brakes (Drilled and Slotted with Ceramic Pads) 6mm
    - Rear Brakes I have done cleanings on, still at 5mm on the Drum Shoes
    - Valve Cover Gaskets, Spark Plug Seals and Cam Plug reseal
    - New Spark Plug wire kit from Toyota
    - New Fuel Injector and Like New Fuel rail replacement (from a 4Runner with 100k)
    - New Fuel Pump Replacement
    - Both Lower Ball Joints (This is the most important one to worry about!)
    - Replace a 4 Tires from BFG KO2's to BFG KM3's 2 years ago with 33x10.50x15
    - I have after market allow rims by Mickey Thompson on my truck, I bought the truck with them already on
    - New brake line on the passenger side
    - New Upper Ball Joint on passenger side
    - New Radiator
    - Steering Rack (Toyota Remanufactured, Came with Inner Tie Rods)
    - New Outer Tie Rod Ends on Both Sides
    - New Power Steering Pump
    - New Alternator
    - New Battery from Toyota (24F I think it is) I put in a bigger battery that usually goes in Tundra's
    - New Heater Core
    - New Rear U-Joint to the Rear Diff Pinion
    - New Reman Start from Toyota
    - 3" Coil-Over Bilstein 5100 Series Lift, 1.5" Toytec Blocks and 5100 Series Shocks

Here are some pictures to give you reference of my truck, enjoy!

With an engine swap, someones got to line that up as DIY project or pay for it to be done. At that mileage and age/ lack of lifelong solid maintenance other problems probably exist or will soon. Trans could be going. Other little things its a project basically So like I said, about 3k…

Being Raptor lined really devalues it for most people.

I'd try to figure out a way to fix it, either yourself or paying someone. You're losing out on 6-10k in value by not being in good running condition and really limiting the number of people that would consider buying it. Most folks are going to want to buy a truck, not a project.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking too, but I’d be dumping all of my savings into for something that isn’t guaranteed for me to sell for that extra amount. Plus with my history of every time I fix something, there’s something else wrong with it (yes it’s to be expected with an older truck) but at the same time it’s never gone easy or smooth.

Sounds to me like you have some relatively easy maintenance issues (water pump, CV reboot, replace cracked TB tube, U-bolts, T-case seals) and one big one.

I think it comes down to whether you love the truck or not. If you don't, just sell it, take what you can get, and buy a new truck.

If you're fond of the truck, do the head gasket job and maintenance. Looks like you've kept up on quite a few things.

Vehicle ownership is expensive...you'll eventually run into problems with a new truck that are gonna cost $$$ to fix.

I paid $6500 for my 2000 four years ago with 296K miles and have 350k today. I was offered $6500 a few weeks ago(not selling). Prices on most vehicles is up though due to car shortage.

You have a nice looking truck there. Think long and hard about selling it. I'd say $3 is a fair price. I sold a VERY nice 03 Tahoe LT 4wd a year ago that developed a rod knock for $2200.

No one is buying this to cruise to the bingo parlor on sundays after church. It's a 'froader with a blown motor.

If anything, the raptor increases the value to the target buyer...

@OregonTacoma97 the way you find out what it's worth is by putting it up for sale. It's worth what someone is willing and able to pay for it. Don't go by what strangers on the interwebs (who aren't in the market) are telling you they'd pay for it.

Pick a number and post it. If you get 20 calls a day, you're not asking enough. Either repost it for more, or just start a bidding war. If you don't get any calls, you're either not reaching enough people or you're asking too much.
