I have a 2000 tacoma Xtracab with a 3.4 l 5 speed manual transmission and I have had a difficult time getting it to shift smoothly. I changed fluids to the redline mt stuff but it's still a beat to shift, especially 1st and 2nd gear .... There is also a pretty good whine when I press the clutch in to shift gears until the gear is engaged and I let off the clutch. The sound does away when the truck is warm ..... 189,712 miles on the odometer if that helps and I am looking at purchasing this rig but this has me concerned ....bb4cb7bc9ff9c7c3c8e6c655fefcfd07_504ae70464029007bc6b751a530b9a179812aedd.jpg

    Hello Mr. Bear.

It this the original clutch? If so, it may be time to replace it. The clutch is a wear item like brakes....they need to be replaced when they wear out.

Yessir, or at least I think it's the original... I am looking to purchase the rig and the guy selling has replaced tons of stuff but the clutch isn't among those listed among the service records... What kind of cost are we looking at since I am looking at the cost of buying the truck also? I really want to like the truck and do but the tranny thing has me spooked

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Your synchros could be going bad also, I'm dealing with the same problem with my Powerstroke with 2nd and 4th gear being hard to downshift into and I got 180k miles on that. They are relatively cheap and easy to fix by a qualified wrench.

I do all the work on my truck so, I don't know how much a shop would charge to replace. Call a dealership or a tranny shop and ask for a quote. Use the price they tell you to see if the seller of the truck will come down on the price to cover the cost of the possible clutch replacement. A tranny shop would definetly tell you if it is clutch or synchros. Most places offer free diagnoses.
