I swapped my 2.7L motor last weekend after the old motor sheared the crank bolt and key, I picked up a motor that came out of a truck that was rolled and supposedly when the motor was pulled it ran good without any noises. Before the swap, I replaced the oil pump, water pump, clutch, and pilot bearing, as well as the valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. Now after the swap, I have a knocking sound and I can't tell what it coming from, i have taken all the belts off to verify that it's not any of the "accessories", I have also pulled the valve cover just to see if anything got into the motor while I had it apart and did not find anything. I also did a compression test as shown below. added some Lucas oil stabilizer to see if that would help, but the noise is still there, I'm not sure where to go from here. here is a video of what it sounds like, any Ideas are much appreciated, Thank you!

    Cylinder 1 - 145 psi
    Cylinder 2 - 135 psi
    Cylinder 3 - 149 psi
    Cylinder 4 - 165 psi

Which ever is easiest... disconnect a fuel injector or spark plug one at a time and see if the knock goes away. This will isolate the cylinder if it is an internal issue.

I tried unplugging the coils, but as soon as I did the engine quit.

That sounds kinda high pitch to be rod I think? Hard to tell from video. Can you use a stethoscope, metal rod ect. to listen to the valve cover, timing chain area, and oil pan to see where it sounds loudest.

Do you know any more info about the motor? Was it running until shut off upside down? How many miles does it have?

I was told it has 165K miles, no idea if it was running upside down or not, but was told he drove it on and off a trailer after the accident and it still ran good.

I just unplugged the injectors on cylinders 1 and 2 and did not hear the knock anymore, as soon as I plugged them in it came back

Darn it, not good, it is an interenal issue. Do you have the oil filter that was on the motor when you picked it up, if so, open it up and look in the pleats.

I opened up the filter that was on the motor when I got it. And the oil that came out has quit a bit of sparking in it as well as the filter it self.

Well, I think it is borescope time and a phone call to the motor seller to see whats what.

I have talked to the seller and he keeps claiming that it ran fine when he pulled it and he is adamant that the issue is something I did, but that doesn’t make any sense. I have a buddy coming over with a borescope later this afternoon

Tough situation to say the least. Ask him what is it that you could have done to cause the issue, run it without oil? Really, why would you go through all of that work just to do it again. Is the seller local, out of state or?

I never once ran it without oil, I put fresh oil in it as soon as I had the motor bolted in place before I finished hooking everything up. The seller is out of state, I replaced the oil pump, water pump, clutch and pilot bearing as well as the valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket, I just changed the oil after running it a bit and added some Lucas oil stabilizer to it and it’s still knocking. Today I swapped the injectors from my old motor and cleaned the hole that they go into on the motor side.

Well, crap. Him being out of state is a problem, a $200 motor is one thing, $2000 is something else. Is this an ebay thing where there might be some recourse or?

I paid $500 and found him through a first gen Tacoma group on Facebook, in my cause this is a big loss as I’m young and don’t have the money for a $1,000+ motor so this was my one chance for the moment to get my truck going again.

Maybe he will be a standup guy and give you your money back or some of it, I think the shipping will be on you. FB has a tendency to put pressure on peeps who take advantage of other FB peeps.
