    Wire harness and ECU swap
I have a question I have a 1997 Tacoma 2rz 2.4L . I wanna swap the wire harness and ECU to a 2001-2004 model wire harness and ECU box . But my ignition harness doesn’t plug in . I looked up different boxes and it shows the the is a 01-04 ECU box that’ll fit my ignition plug fit . Just wanting to make sure I’m doing my research right.

    Why??

    Pick a year !!

Your switching from the distributor ignition to coil packs??

What do you mean your ignition harness ??

Do you mean the 4th ECM plug from the Cab?

To do this swap you need the EWD`s from all years involved

The 4th plug will need to be repinned

It’s the 3rd ECM plug. There’s only 1 from the cab and 2 from the harness.

That is still part of the engine harness

True. But when I remove the box with the harness there’s only 1 plug left under the glove box for ignition purposes. So there isn’t 4 plugs only 3.

Are kidding me.....97 uses a rotor and has no cam sensor.....

2001 ecm is gonna need a new engine harness.....you know the one that powers :
coil over plug coils, a cam sensor, the different evap controls, the power steering electronic solenoid....
    did I miss something........

And the real shocker is the ecm has to match the engine and that years particular transmission....their electronic too.....

So you could keep the block....but everything else above it and behind it would have to be changed.....

Starting 2003 the throttle bodies go to fly-by-wire.....

Thanks for the help partnas . I got it to work out . Repinned the ignition plug to the 01-04 ignition plug . Yes I know to replace the head do to no cam sensor on 97 head. Truck started right up runs good no issues. Just used the 01-04 harness and box only bc my it was all I had . Here where am from rare to find Tacoma parts and having it shipped to where I’m at cost an arm and a leg . Is I only found the 01-04 harness and box

Those pre 98 ecm's are a pia to find,
may even have to ordered one programmed by 3rd party.....
but they can be found in the $200 to $400 range......

....my guess this is your cheapest option........

Other extreme end......maybe your ready for new heads....
then that would be completely different......
...but without a donor truck, all those changed parts would add up fast......

your talking to someone who did it.......but I wanted a totally new truck....bumper to bumper....

what ever you think its gonna cost.......double it.....at least....

I'm doing the same thing you did, 2004 2.7L into a 1997 2.7L. Swapped out ECU, so I see wire harness doesn't connect to the one on top of glove box. Is that the only thing you had to do wiring wise? Thanks.
