Pretty much followed the OP but put a single DIN right above the AC controls. There is more room for a single din vs double din which hits the roll bar in the dash. Someone with some skills could probably do a much better job than I did.

Hmm, I might CAD up and 3D print a solution in ABS plastic. I could take my bezel off and do the measurements, etc. If I were to do this, is there any interest in this part?

EDIT: Changed this message due to BST rules.;)

0$ I already have one :D. That’s a great idea, I thought about doing that but don’t have access to CAD at home after graduating. The difficult part is going to be trying to mimic the the front face of the bezel if you want it to look stock. If not and you just make the front face flat it shouldn’t be very difficult.
I am working on a version 2 of my bezel, stay tuned, hope to have it done in about a month pending my work schedule.

Yes, well you put many many hours into your one-of-a-kind mod. I'm just looking for motivation to make a plug and play replacement. Or at the very least, a simple cut, and snap in add-on.

I'd be interested, depending on what can fit though too. Would it only be for 01-04? I know we have "digital" hvac controls that can be moved if needed. I think there is a brace piece behind that gets in the way of some double DIN receivers

I see from @MuddyBeaver's posts that there's double din brackets, etc. in the way. I wonder if those can be removed. As for installation, a CNC machine can be used to create replacement brackets.

EDIT: I see there's a heater core in the way. Does that heater core get really hot behind the stereo? I wonder if it will damage stereo components. This could really limit stereo options to slim ones only.

EDIT2: Okay, so prior to '01, the HVAC controls were cable driven, not digital. So those may not be able to be moved due to cable lengths, etc.

EDIT3: Man, it sure would be nice if there was a stereo that could function with HVAC controls... As an electrical engineer, I know it's not that hard, but getting the software on the screen to do it would require customization of an Android-based stereo probably. I tried to read up on swapping 4Runner automatic climate control thermostats, but I didn't see anyone confirm a solution... yet.

@Takomasak after looking into it more it is not a heater core pipe it’s actually a tube support to reduce cab flex, I would not mess with this unless you want to do some major modifications to move it out of the way.

I should have used the machine shop at school to sneak in a coupler brackets for this.

I do have a 2002 so have the digital controls, I was thinking on my drive home yesterday about looking into an aftermarket climate control unit to install, a head unit with these controls would be even better but due to the slim radio depth required I doubt they can fit climate control components in there as well. I am mechanical engineer but decent at electrical work and definitely something in my wheel house if I find an aftermarket solution. I’ll let you know if I find anything.

Also, I would not recommend the radio I have, I have had plenty of issues with it and the Car play isn’t nearly as good as others I have used. Constant freezing and does this really cool thing where it will randomly freeze and play a buzzing noise full volume, the only way you can stop it is to turn the truck off.

the thing I hate THE MOST about modern cars… is the AC controls in the radio/infotainment system.

There will be some cutting required in the dash no matter what if you want to relocate the screen to where I have it. If you want to pick my brain for anything on the bezel or cutting/fitment pm me.

Also like I said I’m working on a version 2 that will include rocker switches and better mounting blocks. So the one I have in right now will be for sale at some point.

really curious about this method. Can you please list the parts you used for this single din relocation?
Thank you,… anticipating this for a possible future project.

@MuddyBeaver i want to try this project for my own truck - one thing that I’m confused about is how the double din is supported after the modifications. Presumably it’s not just the trim piece holding up the weight of the stereo, is it? Just want to know that the install will be solid before I start chopping things up. Cheers.

I did it to mine about 2 years ago. The toughest part was making little brackets and securing the stereo in the dash. It will take some patience and fabrication skills but nothing too difficult.
