2001 Automatic 3.4L TRD supercharged

Yessir. Just remove the glovebox, the black plastic thing and you can pull it out.

 

you would see a fuel line running from the driver side of the engine bay to the back of the supercharger near the throttle body.

 

Yeah I think that's the safe bet, I mean people do put a lot of miles on superchargers that could probably use a rebuild, but if it sounds bad then it's not worth risking it if you don't have to.

 

Thats what I thought, I just wasn't sure where it would be located. Im quite familiar with the engine but a super noob with the Supercharger, So i'm excited for this whole rebuild. Learning new things is the best.

 

I was debating doing a quick start up and recording it so that I could get some of TW peoples opinion form the noise. but I figured the best way is to take it apart and provide pictures of the internals.

*I did have the PO start it for a quick minute before I bought it so I could at least hear the engine

 

With the noise you described before if you run that supercharger you are just possibly creating more damage to the supercharger and taking a risk of inhaling some bearing debris into the engine

It needs a full rebuild path going forward regardless what you see inside if you open it up and those miles

 

frames likely ok, don't listen to that clown
you will have so much fun cleaning and painting it to something much MUCH more durable than that crappy taco coating

 

Well, it’s been a loooong time coming, but I finally have a rebuilt supercharger! Thanks to JonBond! I am installing it back on this weekend. I wish it didn’t take so long but work and life and 8month old baby pushed this down the priority list and I’m crossing my fingers that I have no startup issues. But I’m sure it’ll be fine.



After SC rebuild, my total cost for this truck is so far is $3006.

Anyone have any input on towing with a supercharger? Should I avoid towing or what?

Did they not put a better fuel pump in when these were an option from the dealer? Just the same as regular 3.4? I’ll have to look into that, I will need to save up to start doing more upgrades

Also, my 96 says to use the dual prong spark plugs, are those what I should use with this 2001 SC? I remember reading something About particular plugs being best with a supercharger but I don’t know when or where that was

 

damn.. and i thought i got a good deal with the 95k mile 98 supercharged (well i did.. but the frames toast). nice little truck ya got there, i'd kill for those TRD headers.

 

No option from the dealership for a better fuel pump.
The AME 50-1220 you can buy online from advanced auto with a discount for 95.00.

Use these two step cooler plugs from advanced auto too

 

Do they have twin ground version? It says pretty clearly on the timing belt cover to only use twin ground plugs….? I’ve only used them on my 96 and they have always done good, also when I first did the plugs years and years ago the PO was using single ground and after changing them the truck seemed much happier. Could’ve just been the fact that they were old anyways though.


how are the plugs cooler? Different insulation or something? Genuinely curious how the plugs could be cooler

You DON NOT want to use the stock plugs,
You HAVE To get two step cooler plugs because of the supercharger.

If you use the stock twin plugs they will crack with the supercharger.

Spark plugs come in different heat ranges that’s all.

On a stock motor the twins are fine.

 

My advise for you and anyone getting a supercharger to do these things below to eliminate any ping.
1) new fuel filter.
2) new high flow fuel pump AME

$133 50-1200 E85 In-Tank Fuel Pump, Black, 4.055 x 1.535 x 1.535"es

50-1200 or AME 50-1220,
3) have your fuel injectors cleaned and serviced, motor west in California does them for 125.00
4) get a Gates supercharger belt
5) clean the MAF in both sections, there are two sections that need cleaned in the MAF

If you do these you have a pretty good chance you won’t have ping issues

 

thats all in the pipeline now, the good news is first try starting it in a year and literally started right up. I’m blown away

 

Over time as vapor pressure decreases the fuel can become stale. Stale fuel doesn't evaporate as easily and can cause rough engine idle and hard starting. ... As a result the octane can decrease within months for 87 octane fuels, especially when stored under less than ideal conditions.

You need 91 octane if your running the supercharger so you may get have to drain the gas since it’s over a year old.

 

What’s your position on using the octane booster stuff, you can buy at gas stations, with 91 until I can get my meth injection setup? Is this smart to do or dumb?

 

The majority of those things hardly do anything to increase octane points in your fuel. You'd have to add several of them to increase 87 to 89, or 89 to 91, etc.

There are some good ones you can buy but not typically in the auto parts store. Torco is one brand you can get online that works well from what I hear. Pricey though
