New guy to the thread and I have a question. As far as mechanics go I'm learning but still pretty stupid so here it goes. How hard would it be (price, knowledge, parts needed) to uninstall my TRD supercharger? The guys at the tuner shop I took it to really didn't give me an answer and instead offered me a fuel management system for 1400 bucks. Other shops I've been to as well as mechanics I know say it shouldn't be too difficult but can't really explain to me how difficult. Any threads that anybody knows about or just straight answers?

Its not that hard. A few bolts and hoses.

    Takes time tho.

AND you need to find a stock intake manifold to replace the supercharger.

My advice is just find a good write up on how to install a SC..and do that backwards..

Also..im sure you could sell the SC for around 500-1500 depending on mileage whats all included and extras too.

id offer to buy it right now if i had the money :pout:

I have an intake to use if you really want to pull it off, the you would just need some gaskets and that part is real easy but the question is do you have a 7th injector kit? if so there is a little more to it, like unsplicing the controller in your kick panel and removing the injector and wiring but not to bad.

Yeah, the S/C is kind of the holy grail for us 1st gen guys...well, most of us.

    It's a valid question, methinks.

Hey guys, I've been stalking your forums for a while now and finally have my first question. I've got a 2001 Tacoma with a S/C and want to remove it as well. It does not have the 7th injector kit or any fuel mods, and I don't have the cash to buy that setup. Or the cash to do the nose cone rebuild that I'd have to do sooner rather than later (S/C was put on stock and the vehicle has 130K miles now). I bought the truck used and the S/C doesn't mean that much to me, so I want to take it and the K&N cold air intake off and sell them. But as @Blackdawg said I will need the stock intake manifold and I'm also looking for the stock airbox/airfilter setup. Before I posted in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum I wanted to ask you guys if there is any reason I shouldn't get those parts used. And if the OP @tallmofo608 had success doing this or if there is anything I should look out for.

Personally, unless you're having serious problems with it, like reliability, I don't see much of a reason to go through all the trouble of removing it.

Removing a supercharger just because you're kind of "meh" about it is a lot of work for no real gain (actually a loss!!).

They call it a "bolt on" kit, but there really is more to it than just a few bolts. I bought my truck with one of those "ambient air temp intakes", and it's loud and annoying, but even replacing that with stock was going to cost a couple hundred bucks. Not worth it to me.

Here's a page I found using my google-fu. It has quite an extensive list of things you need to replace to install a SC. Removing one could mean tracking down and RE-installing all the things on this list.

It took me less than 30 minutes to remove mine the first time I did it without having read through any instructions. It literally bolts right on top exactly where the intake manifold was, all hoses in the exact same spots. You can find a used manifold for under $100. If your sc is the black one you should be able to sell t for at least $1500.

I have a intake. Although it's off my 96 so the vacuum hoses I'm sure are different.

I so no reason to buy a used intake. But you'd want to buy a new belt of course. May as well do all new belts.

At 130k there is a lot of maintenance items that should have been done and if they haven't you have a lot of work to do.

Also, after getting a new intake and gasket and other parts, you'd end up spending more then just rebuilding the nose cone. May as well just do that. It isn't hard to do if you have the tools.

Plus it'll save you money if you need to do other curatial maintenance items like LBJs, timing belt and water pump, spark plugs and wires, tie rods and all that stuff.

I can't imagine why anyone would remove it unless they were trading in the truck or unable to afford running premium octane...otherwise its craziness:goingcrazy:

If I were to do it, I'd find someone local who would trade manifold + their time to help you remove it for a discount on the price of the S/C

Can you put a supercharger on the 2.7 3RZ-FE?

Yes. But not the same one off a 5vzfe. Trd made one for the 2/3rz but it's very hard to find.

May as well turbo it. I4s are easy to turbo. LCE has lots of kits and support for that.

How much does it cost to turbo an I4? How much of a performance boost am I looking at?

    Thanks!

    How much you got?

Plenty of people pushing 300-500hp. All depends on how deep your pockets are and how much time and effort you want to put in.

All this turbo talk makes me miss my '86 4Runner with the 22RTE. That was a hot little number (for what it was), fun to drive. Put 300k+ on it before I found coolant in my oil (head gasket was fine). :(

    Jeez, really? That's insane.
I don't know, how much do these things usually cost? I have a couple hundred I can throw at it. Don't know if that'll do much.

First off, thanks everyone for the quick replies, I really appreciate it. I'm trying to reply to everyone in this one message hopefully that turns out okay.

@jbrandt I guess I should have clarified, I am having a hell of a time getting rid of the "High Gear/Low RPM Ping" that GadgetOnline talks about. I have to drive it like a grandma to avoid the pinging. I've tried just about everything I can including: always running 91 octane, I changed O2 sensors, I tried Torco to boost octane even higher, I went a step cooler with my spark plugs to the IK22 Iridium(5310) that UnderDogRacing says the supercharger needs, replaced my fuel filter, tested to see if the K&N was just letting in too much are, and I'm sure other things I've forget to mention. Needless to say nothing worked and the pinging persists. I have accepted the fact that I will either need to buy the fuel mod kit from URD or remove it to get away from that dang pinging. Since I can't afford the fuel mod, I'm going to do the latter.

@Clay_916 That's reassuring to here, I was hoping it was guna be a simple switch. And yeah I've spotted one manifold for $65 online , trying to figure out if its the exact one I need though. And it is the black 2nd generation one, that's a big part of why I decided to do this. If I can turn a bad situation into $1500 that's ideal.

@Blackdawg Can I PM you to talk about possibly buying your intake?

Also I don't mind buying new belts I don't know when the previous owner replaced them last anyway, would probably replace them soon regardless. And yeah the gasket and the intake is probably guna put me back around $200 unless I can spot some deals, but I'm hoping selling the S/C will make up for that loss. And the peace of mind of not hearing that dreaded pinging noise anymore.

I'm not sure what your saying about the maintenance though, are you implying that those are extra expenses I will have to make only if I remove the S/C?

Damn. Shoulda kept that rare gem. Was probably a bad turbo seal.

Lol that will barely buy you just a turbo.

We are talking thousands of dollars.

Maintenance like timing belt water pump, LBJs, tie rods all that stuff. Should have been done in the last 30k. If it hasn't. Get on it and fast. That also costs a lot.

That's my only point if your tight on funds.

But your right you can sell the blower to make up money.

Again my intake has a lot different vacuum lines. Not sure it would be worth it. If you found one for $65. Take it.

Oh dang the notorious pinging issue. I dunno how I got lucky, but I don't get it with no fuel mods at all. I also run the IK22s and 91. :/
