Hi guys. A friend of mine recently had a rod thrown through the block in her engine. We aren't exactly sure what happened, and have not yet taken a thorough look into it. There is a hole in the block. My oldest is about to turn 16 and we have been casually shopping around for a Tacoma for him (that's what he would like). Anywho, my friend decided to purchase a newer Tacoma and plans to sell the 2001 with a blown engine. It is a V6 automatic with 180,00 + miles on it. My husband, dad and brother are all capable mechanics and could easily install a new engine. So we are considering purchasing it, however she is asking $5,000. Obviously there isn't really anywhere to find the value of a truck with a blown engine so I was just curious to see what you think. Thanks in advance :)

I would look up the blue book price and subtract 2500.00 to 3000.00. You can pick up a low mileage engine for 850.00 to 1200.00, + installation. Of course, you save the install costs by doing it yourself, but figure it in, anyway. http://www.kbb.com/

2k for what? Motor only, or motor + install?

I have to think a new/used salvadge yard motor would average 1K. The install should take you a few or three hours if no snags come up. I would go that route if the rest of the truck feels right. you should be at 8.5k done. ALL IN....

yeah but there will always be snags :(. probably going to want to throw in a new flywheel/clutch. whole new gasket setup will be additional. plus all the old rubber/plastics that don't really move will move during the swap and break like the air intake boot. plus needing a new ignition and possibly injectors, new timing setup, hopefully the AC system doesn't get damaged or theres more money.

just too many factors that could easily happen. that's why I say more like 2k.

and I still don't understand how a rod could go through the motor. they're pretty well connected to the crankshaft. unless it split in the middle and spun, pointing to the inner wall of the block, then got pushed out the side of the block.

Since you don`t say what part of the country.

Which has a big impact on condition.

$5000.00 for a non running truck is quite crazy.

Maybe $1500.00 but it would need to be super clean other wise.

Then some people will pay be bucks for something they think theywant right now.

Get and post lots of pictures if you think this might happen.

Engine compartment and frame around the rear axle .

It is quite easy to have a rod bearing fail the bolts break the rod get jammed through the block.

it could have failed from the dreaded Strawberry Milkshake which means the transmission and case could also be Fubared

I second the idea to take KBB for that exact truck and subtract 3-4K.

@tinner There are 2001 Tacomas worth 500 bucks right up to well over 10k.

Need more pics and details to say what its worth.

Seeing as how your family seems to be mechanically inclined, I would value their opinion.

I can try to grab a few pictures today. Unfortunately she had to leave it here in Nebraska (luckily it blew only 60 miles from us) and she lives 6 hours away. She's also mentioned she may take the after market bumper, rims, tires and a couple other things off and sell separately. My husband doesn't think it's worth paying the $5000. She said it blue books at 10K so that's why she's asking 5k. I'm not exactly sure what my husband is wanting to pay. It has a supercharger as well, so we would have to get a new computer/software wouldn't we? I guess it's up to the guys to decide if the work they have to put in is worth paying what she's asking ;)

Hmm now that you mention the other parts it may be worth it....you don't need a new computer or anything but the urd 7th injector is highly recommended image.jpg

I'm not quite sure. When she first left WI to head to CO she started having problems when she hit an ice storm. She thought maybe it was the linkage at the time. Forgive me for having a horrible memory, but something with it either not wanting to shift into 4th gear or overdrive OR it was running high RPM in 4th or OD. I can't exactly remember. She took it in and the shop told her she needed new coils and spark plugs (again I THINK if I remember right) so she put nearly $400 in it to drive it about 7 hours and bam, it started to clunk and smoke so she pulled off to the side of the interstate. I kind of have a feeling there's quite a bit wrong and a LOT is going to be needing replacing. My husband was thinking in the range of maybe $2000 as well.

@tinner judging by your descriptions there could be other things wrong with it. shifting issues point to trans or computer possibly.

a thorough look-over is needed but there is no way that at 180k miles is it worth 10k

heck a look at kbb says $6k for V6, ext cab auto 4wd with TRD package @180k miles...and that's with a working engine. and we all know kbb over-values Tacomas so this is surprising.

The truck seems to be in decent shape. A few dings and scratches interior isn't perfect but its clean. I guess if the tranny might need to be replaced too that would come into play on the value. I've no clue what the after market stuff is worth if she decides to pull it off and sell separately or what it would add value wise tot he truck of we purchased the whole lot.IMG_20151203_124708137.jpg IMG_20151203_124721317.jpg IMG_20151203_124730196.jpg IMG_20151203_124750349.jpg IMG_20151203_124758809.jpg IMG_20151203_125122877.jpg IMG_20151203_124900290.jpg

ok for DC it's valued at 8k on kbb at "very good" condition in CO (I used Boulder's zip)
