I'm thinking of putting a cold air intake on my Tacoma to get it running a little smoother, I've heard it improves gas mileage and gives a little more power. Seems to be a lot of different answers online whether this is good for the engine or not, does anyone have any expertise on this?

As long as you keep clean filters in your filter box, you'll have zero difference...

Now if you want to supercharge it and you need the extra Un restriction.

Or if you wanted to declutter all the area around oem intake area.

Then maybe, maybe, might be worth the crazy $350 investment.....

If you buy one......dont buy a cheap one.

This is what I have....but its not for everyone....

And since you dont have the old rotten cast iron headers, cant improve much if any on that end either........

A lot of the "cold air intakes" I've seen end up sucking in the hot air from the engine bay. When I bought mine, it had one of those, ended up getting an OEM one from a junkyard and like it more. Silver's might be the first I've seen that might actually do what the name suggests. Plus if you do a CAI, you can't snorkel mod!

Yeah if you are not gonna do it right......you'll just take a step backward.

re-oiling a filter, if you do it wrong, you might have to replace a $110 Maf if it gets coated with oil.......

A new filter for the oem one costs you like $18 for a premium one....thats good for 25K...

A cold air one is like $75, and needs to be cleaned and reoiled every 12~15k.....
.....reoil kit alone is $30, so your not saving any.....

Having sold CAIs, I honestly think the improvement comes from putting a clean filter in and the over whelming hope you didn't throw a bunch of money away. Toyota did a pretty good job with the air intake system on these trucks.

It's a fools upgrade. These engines are not limited by the intake and a K&N or clone won't do your engine any favors. I have had a car or two over the years that benefitted from a non OE intake but they were all making double the factory output and longevity wasn't a factor.

Keep the stock box, use a k&n square filter and deck plate mod. Replace a section of the tube with a aluminum tube and your good. Also tried with SC but service your maf regularly because the k&n oil with mess with the sensor. My opinion.

Or, just stay away from K&N filters and never have an issue with your MAF.

I noticed a difference with mine, keep in mind most the people disagreeing are running big tires where you wont notice much, depends on your setup tho have fun with the build

I suspect that people notice a difference because they want to, not because there really is a difference.
I highly doubt that it does anything significant on our trucks, and probably actually decreases horsepower.
I don't see how big tires makes any difference...
Really, just stay with the factory setup and a good air filter.
