I have a 2002 Tacoma SR5 4x4 auto. The cruise control won’t turn on at all- No light will come on in the dash. The fuses are all good, so I’m assuming it may be an issue with the cruise control module or maybe the actual cruise control switch coming off the side of the steering wheel… any ideas for how I could diagnose the problem before I start buying parts and taking apart the steering wheel to replace them??

    Welcome to the forum!!

    I4 or V6

    Has it ever worked??

Does the cruise control light work?

Time to break out the meter and do some testing

Thanks! Very happy I stumbled across the forum- tons of useful info. It’s the I4 and I’ve only had it a couple months. Bought it off an old employee who said the cruise hadn’t worked for several years and the dealer had looked at it and found the issue, but he didn’t drive it enough to worry about fixing it. If the only issue was with the light, it would still engage while at highway speeds. But the cruise control won’t engage at all so I’m assuming they’re an electrical issue at the stalk or module. Am I right in that logic?

I don't have this luxury in my 98 but are there any vacuum lines associated with the cruise control on your 02? Could possibly be a leak there if they have any. If it's all electrical like Bivouac said - time for some testing!

Do you have the Electrical Wiring Diagrams for your truck?? You really need this to trouble shoot the cruise control system.

If the light does not work. You would not know if any of the safety switches are open keeping the cruise control from engaging . It only takes one . All the parts are there and connected so easy to disconnect things when they no longer work. Then the dealer techs might have left things apart.

First I would make sure the Cruise control actuator is free and able to move after sitting all this time.

If you can find what pin energizes the actuator .

You can fire the parts cannon and keep replacing parts till you get lucky.$$$$$

If the cruise control ECM failed you would have open circuit protection in most cases .

simple to test the switch functions .

Why having the schematics makes things much easier.

    Best of Luck!

I have a 99 with the cruise stalk coming off the wheel. The button has been sticky for years like the spring is week and I have to fiddle with it to make it come on. So if the button doesn't seem to move that could be it. I accidently found that armor all can help lubricate when cleaning the steering wheel. :p You can replace that whole assembly if you go the trial and error route.

Turns out is was the clockspring. Simple fix and the cruise is good as new
