I have a 2002 Tacoma 2.7 4x4 automatic. The Transmission line is leaking near the fitting. If I can get a 17mm boxed in 6 pt wrench to break the fitting free, does anyone know if I could use copper pipe, flare it and put her back together or are these special fittings? Hate to purchase a whole new line as most of the current line is rubber already.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Get a 17mm line wrench to use on those fittings .

Not sure what kind of reaction a steel nut and copper tubing would have over time.

Search for a used line in case your idea does not work.

I’m new at this! I hope my reply works! Thank You for your reply! The truck is getting almost beyond legal abilities for the road here in Vermont! I wanted to try and get her inspected one last time. I seem to repair one thing and another pops up. The Transmission line is leaking right at the fitting. I wanted to try and see if I could fix it with a copper pipe for now so I can run her until the end of the month. She has a strong 2.7 that has never failed me, runs great and uses No oil! I wish I could find a truck to put the motor and transmission in to!
Does anyone know if the fitting can be removed from the side of the transmission and replace with a new fitting with a section of pipe and finish off with rubber hose?

I'm not familiar with the auto tranny lines but if they're anything like the power steering lines (typical flare nut,) do not use an open/box end. What you want is a proper flare nut wrench pictured below, or a crows foot wrench (most crows foot are configured like flare nut wrenches.) Check the spec and do not overtighten, the last thing you need is to crack the housing.

Have you just tried tightening the flare nut? (see warning about overtightening. :p ) Check carefully for cracks in the housing, someone may have already tried that, overtightened it, and the can of worms gets bigger.

If it goes into a hose like the power steering return line, you might get away with removing the tube part and fabricating one if you can find the exact flare nut. If it were me, I'd bite the bullet and buy the line, even an aftermarket one. On a 2002, rubber is likely beginning to decompose anyway, it wouldn't be worth the effort to me to do the extra work to save a buck.

I tried the flare wrench and the nut started to strip. So, I cut the line off almost at the nut with a dremmel tool. I then had a 17mm 6 point socket, 1/2” drive that I was able to put on the fitting. With just a little tap, I was able to turn out the fitting, remove the pipe out of the fitting. I then took a 3/8” piece of copper tubing, double flared the end, put it back into the fitting and screwed it in, clamping the opposite end into the neoprene hose, hopefully that fixes it, will try her out today!
