I am in the middle of a full rear end restoration on my 2002 Tacoma V6 4x4. The frame is Swiss cheese over the rear wheels so I have the bed off and am cutting, grinding, prepping everything for welding on RustBusters frame caps to try to get my Taco from 200k to at least 300k if not more.

When I got to addressing my LSPV which is unrecognizably rusted away I had so many questions on how it functions and can hardly find anything on it anywhere on the web. So, I want to provide folks with the same curiosity about this mechanism some more insight into what this part looks like on the inside. I purchased a used LSPV off EBay to replace my rotted one and here is what it looks like disassembled for cleaning.

Can anybody explain how it actually functions? When I reassemble it the spring inside pushes the plunger(the blue anodized part that is attached to the end that extends out of the LSPV which makes contact with the load sensing rod that is attached to the axle housing) up in the opposite direction from the rod. That doesn’t make sense to me unless once it’s reinstalled the pressure from the brake fluid in the system creates internal pressure that pushes the plunger against the internal spring allowing it to be pushed back up from the external rod once the truck is carrying a heavy load. Does this make any sense?

For the record I am planning to make the bracket mod that requires cutting the rod down to make it manually adjustable since I rarely carry a super heavy load and also have Tundra front brakes.

Great job on the LSPV delete ControlCar! Do you have links to LanceRN and Bivouac’s posts on their bypass processes?
