Good afternoon, I have a 2002 Tacoma 3.4l auto transmission. Lately it has been making a whining noise in 1-4 gear but goes away in overdrive. It does not make this noise in park or neutral either. Any recommendations here?

Just checked my transmission fluid after my drive home from work. It was full and looks really clean, has a light red pinkish color. The guy I bought the truck from told me the transmission was rebuilt at 140,000 miles. It has 180,000 on it now and has just started making this noise about 1,000 miles ago. It does not whine when I’m in park and rev it up, only starts when I shift to reverse or drive. Torque converter??

Look at your carrier bearing, the one in the middle of the axles see how much shake or wobble you have. Mine was making a similar noise usually when accelerating or decelerating, I climbed under there and had quite a bit of play. I changed mine out and noise went away.

Seems to start making the noise as soon as I shift to drive or reverse. With my foot on the brake and not moving as soon as I shift to drive it makes this noise. Anyone else run into this problem?
