I replaced my air bag control module with a used one off a 2001 Tacoma. I was told by Toyota that the part number on the 2001 and 2002 are the same (8917004040). I had the used part checked and it was cleared for installation. The replacement part was installed and I still have the red light on. My mechanic is going to run another scan today. I also replaced the On/Off air bag switch at the same time because it was bad. Any suggestions on how to clear this light? Thanks!

The factory workshop manual has a procedure for reading the Air Bag SRS Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) to determine the location of the fault. The procedure describes how to read DTCs without the use of a specialized Toyota DTC reader. I would make sure your mechanic is using this troubleshooting approach outlined in the workshop manual.

Update. The airbag control module has been replaced with a working unit. The red light remains on. Toyota ran a scan and said there is no DTC, so it cannot be cleared. My nephew, a mechanic, ran a scan on a quality MATCO scanner. Results were NO DTC, yet the light remains on. He created a fault in the module, which the scanner detected, and was able to clear it. Still the light remains on. I am wondering if the light is the problem. Has anybody else ran into this problem.

I haven't owned or worked on any Tacos newer than 1995.5, so just a question from that inexperienced perspective. Is it possible this is related to the airbag cutoff switch for P-side airbag? Is it the same light that illuminates when the switch is set to off?

I replaced the P side air bag switch with a new Toyota part when the problem first arose. The first DTC's were for the P Side switch and air bag control module. That DTC was cleared with the new switch installation. The light remains on whether the PSIDE switch is in the on or off position.

Yes, you could just cut off the bulb. That has been considered.

The key question is if the system shows no DTC's, then if the light is on is the system operational. I am not sure. My mechanic thinks it will work. I am going to run this question by Toyota as I have a visit scheduled for a routine service this week.

Can you give an update as for what Toyota told you? Did you get the light off?

    Thanks
