I have a 2003 tacoma 3.4L v6 with a bad throttle body. Toyota has told me it is a discontinued part. Has anyone else run into this.

    What exactly is "bad"?

Most of the sensors are replaceable as individual parts (TPS, IAC, etc). If it's the throttle body butterfly valve, it can be sent off to a company (MaxBore) to be refurbed.

Do you mean the throttle body positioning sensor? Later model 1st gens are often told they can't be replaced and you have to get the entire throttle body. Haven't heard of the TB itself being discontinued yet.

If it is the sensor (TPS) it can be replaced, you have to source it outside of Toyota though...I can't remember exactly where but hopefully someone on here will see this and recall.

TPS is good......it's the throttle body.

If it was discontinued it must have been recent because a lot of dealers still show it in stock. If you have to, just order from them and bring them the part. Probably save money that way anyhow

but I also agree with @Andy01DblCabTacoma , a lot of times the throttle body just needs to be serviced and re-bored. Toyota won't do that, you have to send it out to a specialist. Cheaper than a new one but it will take time

How about a little more back story- What conditions lead up to taking it to Toyota? Do you have a CEL on? If so, did they provide the codes, or just tell you the TB is bad? I think 03.5-04 have the fly by wire stuff, so they might differ from the pre 03.5 cable driven TBs. So there might be a sensor associated with that system that they don't replace, and just bin the whole TB. But as @eon_blue provided, they look like they are still out there. The other option would be to start checking used part (junk yards) online to see if there are any available. There is one aggregate online junk yard site which will search across the country...

Either way, I'd try to get a little bit more info than "its bad" from them- after all, you probably paid them money to tell you that, and they should be able to provide more details. Then go from there.

This 03 was made in 08/02. What it's telling me is Accelerator pedal position censor is bad. That part on this year is attached to the throttle body and isn't sold separately.

Ok, now you have something to work with. I'd start looking around using the part number above and see if any of the online warehouses (toyota parts deal) or dealers have it. Then if not, start looking for the junk yard parts.
