My daughters 03 Tacoma will not turn over. Battery good / clean / tight. Starter and connections good. Neutral safety switch is good. New starter relay and starter switch, out of desperation. It clicks every time key turned. All dash lights come on proper.

Any one got a schematic of the starting system? What other components do i need to test / replace?

Have you tried just tapping on the starter while trying to turn over?

You know a battery can show a solid 12 volts but not have enough apps to start a vehicle. Try a new battery.

Is it cranking but not firing? Or not even cranking?

Maybe check to see if you have fuel pressure, might be a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump. If fuel presure is good check to see if you have spark

What engine (I4 or V6), what transmission (5-speed or auto)?

Check all of your grounds. It will click but not engage if there is a ground disconnected.

It does not turn over. Just one quit click from starter relay. This is not just a basic issue. Those have been well covered. It is either a bad wire or a COMPONENT that i am not aware of, and desperately searching for. My daughter is busy checking all wire contentions under hood, truck and dash. All fuses have been checked. relay does get voltage but do not know what terminal to jump start from under hood fuse / relay box, to circumvent the key start. Looking for, and need, schematic. She went ahead and installed a new Key switch and neutral safety switch this AM. No go.

Also with poor ground may start frying some cables or wires. :boom:

Connections depends on engine and transmission. What is it?

As stated, if the starter relay just "clicks" once then nothing that means that the starter itself is not getting power. The starter is directly connected in line with the battery. The relay and solenoid is a diff system. If you hear the relay click, that means that the signal has been sent to connect the poles on the starter. If the starter does not engage, that means there is a bad ground or power cable.

Yes in theory but most of the time I have seen this it just clicks. people normally don't hold the key in the start position long enough when they dont hear the starter engage for the wires to start melting.

My battery to firewall ground was disconnected for a long time (never noticed) and the truck still ran normally...I went to check my grounds after reading on here and noticed it. No idea how long it was like that but probably a few months at least. Also noticed my block to firewall ground was bad (still connected but barely). Weird thing is my truck still started up and ran normally. I replaced both though

My dad did. Not in Tacoma, but in Fiat (I know, piece of shit) - the throttle cable turned red melting and smoking the plastic shield. In just 2 seconds.

When I noticed my battery to firewall ground was disconnected, my block to firewall one looked like it was burnt up...I guess that probably explains why lol. Good thing I caught it when I did I guess. I should check the starter ground

I've seen cables fail internally that looked fine on an exterior inspection. It wasn't until we cut away the plastic shielding to expose the copper inside that we discovered the internal failure.

Can you add redundant ground and/or redundant power cable to test the starter while it's on the truck?

    TY all

    Sorry

    It is a V6 auto.

Yup daughter is on the wire hunt now. we will see.

It does look like some one may have installed an after market alarm system. Tuck came with a key FOB and does lock unlock and sound a pitiful sounding alarm.

Will be looking under dash to see if we can find the alarm system and if it is possible that it is locking us out??

This happen several mounts back. For a week no turn over. Then she went out started and did not have an issue till 5K mile later, now. This is when i rebuilt starter and bought all the potential components just in case i need them. She made executive decision to just replace them all. Shotgun method.
