Looking for help with how to do the following.- Got a 2003 Tacoma Pre-runner with a rear axle assembly number of B07A ( open ) and I want to convert it to a B07C ( w/limited slip )
Has anyone done this or can it be simply done ?

    Thanks for your help

Sometime, the VIN sticker contain general information and may not pertain to the actual vehicle. I seen the axle code being different from the actual ratio. But it is an easy task to find out and swap. 6 lug Tacoma (prerunner and 4wd model) has two option: TRD model has the 8” elocker and non-TRD model has the 8.4” open. Even though they’re 8” and 8.4” third, they’re both use an 8” ring but they’re not interchangeable. Meaning you can’t put an 8” elock third member into a 8.4 housing or vice versa.

I don’t recall if first gen has the auto LS option. If it’s an 8.4, you can source the 8.4 third from a first gen tundra or second gen Tacoma, some of their model has the auto LS option. It’s a simple and easy task to swap.

    B - 8” ring
    07 - 4.30 ratio
    C - 2 pinion LS

Chalk both front tires to prevent the truck from rolling as both rear tire will have to be off the ground. Pull the tires, remove the 4 nuts holding each side of the axle/drum assembly, remove wheel cylinder brake line, remove ebrake assembly, slide the shaft about 5” or so out, remove the drive shaft, remove all the nuts off the third member and pull the assembly out. Clean the mounting surface well and put RTV around the entire area. Reassemble everything in reverse and let RTV cured before adding 75w90 gear oil. Bleed the brake. Done.

    Hi 02Helix
Thank you for your reply ! - I guess you are right in that I must first "know for sure" what I really have before I go any further with purchasing parts. - My understanding is there are several aftermarket bolt in LS offerings available but will only adapt up to a ring gear assembly if it has an 8.4 ring gear, 4 pinion and 30 spline axles. - Then I was looking around a noticed that supposedly the 03 Tacoma pre-runner also had an offering of LSD with the 8" ring gear ( called B07C ) B-8", 07=430 gear ratio, C= LSD. - I can not find out if this is true or not ?
Guess I was hoping someone out there had already gone thru this before and could guide me into how this works.
I will continue looking and may have to 1st pull mine apart to see if the door build sticker is actual or not.
    Thanks for your help

I believe 1st gen tacomas didnt come with LSD. For sure double check what gears are in there as mentioned above they dont always match or sometimes diffs are swapped by previous owner.
