So I have a 2003 Tacoma trd off-road prerunner. I’m pretty happy with it but I would like to sell it to get a 4x4 since I’ve been stuck twice. Just need some advice. It has 143k.

If money is no object, sell it and buy a 4x4.

With that out of the way, where and how did you get stuck?

I ask because if you're that quick to lose motivation, maybe you're just needing more time behind the wheel. I have a Prerunner with locker as well, and aside from mud (I still get in it, but not a mud pit or the like) and I've been able to take a lot of 4x4 only trails.

Quality tires, and the ability to air down/up has lead to that success.

The plus side too is, you can convert a Prerunner to 4x4 for less than the initial cost of a 4x4 truck. Doing that also gets you much more familiar with the truck.

    Just my .02

    A hill? Easy peasy

Much taller than my truck, and when I crested over, my sliders hit.

As @Kwikvette said, you can actually convert your prerunner to a 4x4 for less than the overall cost of selling yours and buying a 4x4.

Especially since good condition 4x4s are hard to come by these days (frame rust). If yours is in good condition, KEEP IT AND CONVERT IT!

Especially if you convert it using manual locking hubs, it's not that bad of a job.

@BartMaster1234 has done it, as have many others. It's really a bolt on conversion for the most part. Hardest part is putting the time in to finding the parts.

I did it... And @jbrandt puts it perfectly.

Hardest part was just getting the parts together. The cost can be less than the difference you'll pay by selling your prerunner and buying a 4x4.

I think I was in to my swap for around $3500. But that can be spread out over time... and that cost was including me doing a shift kit, twin sticks, rebuilding the CVs, filled the trans with Redline trans fluid, at 15 bucks a quart, and bought a 2nd driveline that was balanced, and had all the ujoints replaced.

I think @BartMaster1234 did it for more like $1500, and that didn't include re-selling his old transmission.

Of course that was for a much more run of the mill setup, with all stock parts, iirc, but I'm sure he'll chime in. He LOVES talking about that. :D

Ya... I don't know how he got his parts for what he did. I called the same yard 1 year later, and they wanted nearly 4 times what he paid, on the same parts.

My swap was more like $800 after I sold all my 2WD stuff.

You just weren't willing to go that extra mile for a good discount like Tyler was.

I was a broke 16 year old with barely enough money to do that swap in the first place. I hunted for the cheapest parts I could find that were functional.

    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

To Tyler's credit though, he's got 4x4 Tacoma's on a watch list 300 miles out; he messaged me about one that was at a yard near me. I was able to snatch up the manual hubs, door handles, fender, and engine splash guards.

Motor was already gone and it had only been there a day or two.
