For those of you who are in the rust belt, I had a thread going on my gas tank leak here:

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1st-gen-tacomas/351454-2003-trd-v6-gas-leak-tank.html

You can see the truck was rust proofed which made it messy, but kept the body and frame very solid, just like a Texas truck.

The problem with the leak was the tank- one pinhole was pretty much behind where the bolt for the tank strap is. I had trouble seeing the pinhole due to the rubber "bumper" that covered it. There are 2 pieces of rubber on the top of the tank that act as a cushion or anti-rattle I suppose.

When I got the tank out, there was a second hole on top- you could stick your finger in it. I ended up getting a new tank.

The rust proofing was not traveling under that rubber bumper but moisture was able to get in there.

You may want to check the top of your tank. I think if you put a jack under there and loosen the strap, you can drop it low enough to check it out.
