I've got a growling (for lack of a better explanation) sound coming from either my water pump, or my alternator. I took a piece of broom handle and put it on each, but they both sound the same. I wanted to get a consensus of which it might be that's going out on me. In other words, which one is likely to go out first. My trucks got 61,000 miles on it. The reason I'm asking is that, I can change out the alternator, but don't want to tackle the water pump. In my younger days, I'd have done either one, but at my age, I try to keep it simple! :) Any thoughts?

here is a simple way to tell, remove your serpentine belt then spin each pulley.

it could be water pump, a/c compressor, alternator, or even the idler tension pulley but until you spin each on its own and listen to the bearings you wont know which or maybe its more then one.

they should all spin freely without noise

Thanks keakar. I might just have to give it a try. I'm hoping it's the alternator. Seems kind of 'young' for either of them to go out, but you never know. Can't complain, since I got the truck for free! :)
