What is this 'undercarriage without rust' you speak of? Sounds magical.

There's a legend in these hills of a place were Tacomas are rust free. Scientists are skeptical such a phenomenon is possible, but there are those that claim they've seen them. I guess we all have our dreams.

The frame is on order and no answer on a timeline for replacement.

No rental either, told me it was ok to drive.

Happy to be getting the frame replaced, not happy driving my family around in it with a weak frame.

Given my less than desirable experience thus far with this dealer, I'm almost afraid to request my suspension be put back in.

Frame came in yesterday. Should be done next week. Going to get the timing belt, water pump and valve cover gaskets done too.

They gave me a 2012 Tundra for a loaner.
I'll post some pics of disassembly when I get them.

    Hopefully it goes good.

It is pretty nice but BIG! I used to own a duramax crew and a crew cab GMC but after driving my 04 for a few years, I've become accustomed to the size.
The extra room in the Tundra is nice with the family though and the power is really quite impressive with the 4.6.

Haven't driven a 4.6, but mine with the 5.7 certainly earns the rating of impressive power in my books. It does feel big, but I find it more nimble than it feels.

Anyhow, hope things go smoothly with your frame, I still have a love for Tacos, don't get me wrong, they are great trucks. Some day when my boys are grown and move out, I'll likely own another.

Thanks! That 5.7 must really wail, not gonna lie I've been searching craigslist for Tundras since Friday.

I think the dealership had a plan when they gave it to me as a loaner.

You guys that have to deal with your state destroying your personal property i seriously feel for ya!!!! It really is bullshit i think! Especially the states that then make ya do safety inspections and fail you because they ruined your fuckin vehicle! It would make me so damn mad! Im lucky enough to live in a salf free state and all my rigs are completely rust free with all the black paint still in great condition on the frames. They stay darn near wet the entire winter season too without generating any rust. Not rubbin it in to you much less fortunate fellas, trust me i feel fur ya, it would really kill me to loose rigs to rust! All the other shit that goes along with tjat crap too, having to cut off fasteners all the time to work on shit and the used vehicle market must be complete shit, its just terrible! The fuckin salt states should be paying toyota and all other manufacturers for that matter to replace frames, lol...i bet they'd miraculously find alternatives to salt real quick, there are alternatives out there i dunno why they arent utilized if nothing more than to not destroy people's property!

They use cinders in Arizona instead of salt.

Yeah here in oregon as well!! Atleast in most of the state where snow accumulation will occur, which is my region. We will also use a chemical in places that wont really get snow but more just a black ice threat. People say that chemical is fairly corrosive but its never done anything to any vehicle of mine and i figure if it really was corrosive we would be on the list of states under the frame warranty considering how susceptible our tacoma frames are to anything even remotely corrosive! And as i said a bit ago all 3 of my toyota frames are completely spotless...

But yes, cinder, so so so much better than salt! Every once in a great while you'll end up with a windshield chip but shit I'll take that over the alternative any day and really the cinder is a fairly weak structured volcanic rock anyway, its not super crazy hard like basalt er something like that that would really destroy windshields!! I think the cinder offers great traction too and i always figured if you cant drive in the snow or figure it out then you dont need to be on the road. Snow driving isnt that hard even though alot of people sure make it out to be and love to hit them breaks and wonder why they cant steer anymore while they fly off the road or into other rigs, breaks are your enemy while on snow!! But yeah, no need to lay tons of salt to try and enable shitty drivers to stay shitty drivers...right??

People here want to be able to travel no matter the weather. Hence the salt and other chemicals laid down on our roads. They now "pre-treat" the roads before snow with a calcium chloride solution - which benefits the one selling it to the state more than the traveler.

Modern vehicles have far better corrosion protection than the ones I grew up with. From the late '60s until the '80s you could expect the quarter/rocker panels on your brand new car to rust through in as little as three years. I haven't seen rusted out quarter panels on a modern vehicle in decades. You would also have a celebration if your vehicle lasted 100K. Only one of my four Tacomas had less than 100K when I bought them.

So I guess it's where you are coming from. Our Tacomas are a far cry from vehicles from those "dark ages".

Oh i get that! But lay down some sort of traction medium (cinder in our case over here) and drive. I guess its all preference though. We drive on the snow with cinder for traction. If youre okay with the state destroying vehicles undercarriages and driving on salty slushy roads instead i cant knock it i suppose.

As far as older rigs are concerned, idk about body panels but it seems most older rigs with stout frames made with good oldschool steel last longer than todays rigs with cheap thin chinese steel frames.

I can't say I ever heard of a frame failing before I owned a Tacoma. I'm sure it happened, just not on my radar. The body would rust apart, but the frames would last. They were also made of stouter material than these "thin as specs will allow" frames we have.

I'd take cinders over salt any day. Would prob need some better tires though. Wish I still had my Coopers. They would go through anything.

OP, sorry to side track your post.

Been thinking about a Tundra because I want to be able to tow my heavy equipment (5K+ lbs - I pay someone to move it now). I just don't want to give up this Tacoma though.

It really is ridiculous how thin and cheap they make frames nowadays. Well heck that goes for absolutely anything this day and age!! That or swap metal components for cheap plastic of course!

If they could make them out of PVC/ABS they would. My chainsaw crankcase is plastic - probably not PVC though; some other formulation. Don't remember which one though.
