My son wanted to tackle the rear main seal on his 2004 Jeep Wrangler. It has the 4.0L Inline six and auto transmission. To remove the oil pan it looks like the starter needs to come off. He started to remove the starter but said it looked like fluid (trans. fluid?) started to weep out. If never seen any fluid leak out when replacing a starter but there's always a first. So, Jeep experts, what mught be going on?

HA... I have a 04 Rubicon manual with a small oil leak.. I think it is also the rear main seal. I am just going to take it to the speakership and have them deal with it

It could have an input seal that has gone bad.

When mine stops leaking, that’s when I know when to add oil.

Might have been engine oil. When a rear main is leaking badly the oil can fling around and puddle up where the starter bolts up to the engine. When you remove the starter the oil will drip out of the bolt holes and nose of the starter.

Isn't the oil filter right above the starter on that 4.0? Everytime you change oil it's easy to get oil on the starter case

Chevy rear mains leak all the time. The starter will be soaked when you take it out sometimes
