    @Tacoma_alex

I started with a Prerunner, so did @Uphillshunter

You need to get out there and get familiar with your truck, and get acquainted to how you should approach a climb or descent, where to point your wheels, and so forth.

I recommend going out with others, as a good spotter will be worth their weight in gold.

If you were to spend any money on anything, I'd say, get yourself some quality all-terrain tires, a means of airing down and back up, and a shovel. You'll get pretty far with those things alone.

The advice is there; take your truck out and gain experience.

It's the best advice you can ask for.

Now, what I am going to say is strictly an opinion backed by nothing at all other than other people's own thoughts -

Seems a lot of people hate KO2's, whether they're Tacoma owners with trucks that came with KO2's on them, or even Wrangler owners (because most models have KO2's on them as well).

Personally, I've had a great experience with Falken Wildpeak AT3W's on my Prerunner, and love the Cooper ST Maxx I've got on my 4Runner. Both tires have done well in dirt/mud/loose gravel, and the Cooper's performed well in the snow.

Here are the two side by side when I had both vehicles -

I understand what people are saying about getting familiar with your truck etc. And it's good advice.

But let's be honest... on a budget... It's going backwards to buy "good tires" before you lift the truck, you are most likely going to lift anyway.

Getting out and going places, doing things in the truck, is the best thing to do. But to go places and doing things, needs good tires, therefore needs the lift.

Coopers are probably the best tires you could put on your truck. Especially for the price. MUCH better than BFG.

For a Prerunner with no rear locker, you definitely want a good set of AT tires before really going off the beaten path. Unless we're strictly talking maintained fire roads. And I would bring some recovery gear if you plan on doing a little solo stuff.

KO2s treated me well as my first couple sets of tires, on some of the harder trails I used to run. But they had a tendency to chunk up pretty bad (pieces of tread would break off). Never had that issue with my Cooper STMaxx.

My bad I saw that pic of your truck on the 1st page with no TRD logo on the bedside and figured it didn't have the locker.

Locker on a Prerunner is a night/day difference over one without so that's good. But good tires also have an equally important effect

Can we see what these bad leaf springs look like. They never had much arch to begin with.

Negative arch in the springs means they're shot. Flat is normal but negative arch is not

I had that issue with the rear end when my tires were overinflated, ever little bump in the road made the back end feel like it wanted to jump sideways.

But shot suspension can have the same effect too I bet, I would change out the rear shocks as well.
