I am looking for advice. We are replacing the timing belt/ chain on our 2004 Tacoma. I remember being told that it is a good idea to replace the water pump at the same time even if the water pump is working fine. The pump is probably 5 years old and I wish the dealer had suggested we do the timing belt when they were in there doing the water pump. Now we are looking at the opposite repair should we have the water pump replaced ? Any advice quickly would be really appreciated since the dealer has the truck right now. Thanks

I would absolutely change the water pump. Just imagine a year from now the water pump fails and you have to pay to do this all over again. BTW, welcome to TW.

I was like you in the beginning and my water pump was spitting coolant all over the ground so we changed the timing belt, thermostat and actuator and of course the water pump. Problem solved for another 70,000 - 90,000 miles. I have 234,000 and changed it at 200,000

I just did my timing and drive belts as well as water pump. Toyota wanted to do my water pump 3 years ago but I didn't think it was necessary. I think there was a small amount of seepage and they wanted to do everything. Non-interference engine so I rolled the dice. I've been using a local shop and I'm very happy with their service. They've been keeping an eye on it since my last visit to Toyota and we both agreed it was time. It's all overlapping work so it's silly to do one without the other. I'm a pretty low milage truck at 72k but I figure if the truck was purchased in late 2003, everything original is 12 years old at this point.

I wish I had an 04 Tacoma with only 72,000 miles on it!!! I'm jealous! Mine has a lot! Still looks good though!

Nice! I like your set up.
I bought mine 5 years ago with 19k on the clock. I was pretty lucky to live close to work and travel a bunch for work so I didn't clock a ton of miles on my personal vehicle. I'm driving her a little bit more with my new job so I'm running though some paces with repairs and other upkeep. I don't have any intention of selling at this point but I also wonder if I'll ever reach the 300k or 400k club with my lifestyle.
