I know this is the 2nd gen forum but the 1st gen is kinda dead and I am really wanting to know if this sounds normal

I bought a 2004 tacoma xtracab yesterday with 86000 miles on it. This truck has got to last me a long time. I am hearing some noises and just wanted to see if they are normal. When I am accelerating I can hear a slight rumble from the motor. Sounds to me like a very slight miss or exhaust leak. It may be just the engine noise but I just want to make sure that a slight rumble on acceleration is normal. Also somewhere from the front end (kinda sounds on the drivers side) I can hear a bit of a whining noise when I get to around 70 mph. It kind of sounds like something is winding up(when i release the throttle I can hear it wind down. Anyone know what this might be? I am going to take it in early next week and have all of the fluids gone through and replaced. Any other suggestions on things that I could have looked at for preventative maintenance.

If your taking it to the dealer next week why don't you just ask them what's going on instead of asking the wrong forum?

    I'll bite...a few questions:

    1. Have you ever owned other Toyota trucks in the past? i.e. Do you have a frame of reference for what the engine *should* sound like when running normally?

    2. Is there any noticable vibration associated with the "slight rumble", or is it only an audible observation? Does it happen when accelerating at any speeds, or only at particular times (low speeds, high speeds, etc)? Toyota truck engines do have kind of a distinct sound to them, such as the "ticking" and "angry sewing machine" descriptions that have been tossed around here... just trying to distinguish what you describe from what could be normal engine sound.

    3. Is the "winding up" noise possibly caused by air movement over something, or is it definitely a mechanical noise?

    1. Yes-I traded a 12 tacoma for this one and maybe that is the problem being as the 12 did not have that noise. I also owned a 2001 and i can't recall the truck sounding like that but it has been several years so hard to say for sure.

    2. Maybe a little vibration is felt but it is all coming from the motor. It happens accelerating at any speeds.

    3. The winding up is definetly a mechanical noise.

Hmmm, hard to say without hearing it myself. If you've owned other Toyota trucks before and it still sounds abnormal, may want to get it checked out.

Maybe the previous owner added a turbocharger?

    (kidding...I think).
